The Muhlenberg field hockey team, seeking its second win against a nationally ranked team this season, cut a two-goal deficit in half before eventually falling to 11th-ranked Montclair State, 2-1.
The Mules (3-5) started out strong, taking two shots in the opening minutes, but the Red Hawks (10-1) took over control and scored two goals, one in each half, before allowing another shot.
Less than five minutes after Montclair's second goal, Muhlenberg was awarded its first penalty corner of the game and capitalized. Senior
Stephi Rydgren took a pass from freshman
Sarah Raab and beat the Red Hawk goalie at a tight angle from the right side with 11:13 remaining. It was her third goal of the season.Â
The Mules continued to apply pressure after their goal, winning two more penalty corners. Their last one came with about a minute left and they got off a good shot, but it was saved.
Junior
Jordan Segrave made six saves for Muhlenberg.
The Mules, who had their three-game winning streak snapped, have scored exactly one goal in each of their first eight games.
