Softball Drops Pair at Ursinus

Bears sweep Bullets in conference play

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. The Gettysburg College softball team suffered a sweep at the hands of Centennial Conference foe Ursinus College Saturday afternoon in Collegeville, Pa.

Gettysburg (11-13, 1-3 CC) posted just three hits in a 4-0 loss in the opener with Ursinus (12-10, 3-3 CC). The Bullets tried to rally from a three-run deficit in the nightcap, but the Bears held on for a 4-2 decision.

With runners on second and third in the bottom of the first inning, the Bears, Morgan Comfort, belted a sacrifice fly that drove Mackenzie Brennan home, making it 1-0 to start game one. An RBI double by Amanda Ladzinski added another run for the hosts to pull ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the third.

The Bullets found themselves in scoring position in the top of the sixth as sophomore Shelby Baker (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) singled to left field. Pinch runner Jessica Ken-Kwofie (Westfield, N.J./Kent Place School) stole second followed by back-to-back-walks from sophomore Brynn Griffith (Maple Glen, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and junior Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) loaded the bases. Unfortunately, the Bullets were unable to capitalize as two quick outs ended the inning.

The final tally of game one came from Heather Lazer as she notched a two-RBI double to right center in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Bears.

Junior Rachel Julie (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff), junior Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic), and Baker each produced a hit.

Jonik busted the bats for the Bullets as she opened the first inning with a solo homer down the right field line in the nightcap. Julie followed up with a double to left center and a sacrifice bunt by senior Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) allowed Julie to advance to third base. Baker walked and stole second, but then a ground out into double play concluded the frame.

The hosts answered right back with an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 1-1.

Another RBI up the middle in the bottom of the third gave Ursinus the 2-1 lead. The Bears tacked on two more runs as RBI singles came from Faith Carson and Delaney Baker in the bottom of the sixth.

With two outs, Julie kept the Bullets comeback hopes alive as she tallied an RBI double to left field, allowing Cowell to cross the plate for the run in the top of the seventh inning. Cowell opened the frame for the Bullets by hitting a single to the shortstop. However, the rally fell short as the next batter for the Bullets grounded out to third base.

Julie went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two doubles. Jonik added a run, RBI, and dinger.

Gettysburg returns to Bobby Jones Field to welcome Dickinson College for a 3 p.m. game on Tuesday.
