Men’s Soccer Golden in OT Victory

Bullets knock off Washington 1-0

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman Connor Fife (Newtown, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) was in the right place at the right time for the Gettysburg College men's soccer team, putting enough of his body on a cross to direct it into the goal and send the Bullets to a 1-0 overtime victory over Washington College in the Centennial Conference opener at Clark Field Saturday night.

Gettysburg (2-2-1, 1-0-0 CC), which was playing it second consecutive overtime match following an overtime draw with No. 19 Rutgers-Newark last weekend, stymied Washington's (2-3-1, 0-1-0 CC) attack all evening, holding the Shoremen to just three shots with only one of those on goal. Freshman Dillon Konzelmann (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) made his lone save in the 34th minute on an attempt by Brian Graham on the way to his second consecutive shutout of the season.

The Bullets controlled the action for much of the match, though Washington's physical back row did not allow many clean looks at the cage. The host's best opportunity to score in the opening period came during a flurry of activity in front of the cage about 19 minutes in. Three shots came at the Shoremen's goal with an attempt by sophomore Obi Ikoro (Piscataway, N.J./Pingry School) headed away by a defender.

Gettysburg's defense completely shut down Washington in the second period and overtime, surrendering no shots in the match's final 62 minutes.

After breaking up a drive by Washington late in overtime, the Bullets went on the offensive with freshman Jack Carroll (Leonia, N.J./Bergen Catholic) driving down the middle of the field and slipping a pass wide left to junior Precious Ozoh (Abuja, Nigeria/Holderness School (N.H.)). Ozoh dribbled toward the baseline and just before reaching the line, knocked a cross in front of the net where Fife was waiting to direct it into the cage in the 97th minute.

Gettysburg finished with an 18-3 edge in shots and an 8-2 lead in corner kicks.

The Bullets travel to Lebanon Valley College for a non-conference match on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m.
