Muhlenberg sophomore Greg Baum pinned the top-ranked 141-pound wrestler in Division III on the opening day of the Messiah Petrofes Invitational.

The Mules ended the first day solidly in third place, behind only sixth-ranked Mount Union and 17th-ranked Messiah.

Baum (pictured above) trailed 8-3 entering the third period against Mount Union's Jordin James, the 2019 Division III national champion at 133. He chose the bottom position and escaped, then chased James down and pinned him near the edge of the circle just 19 seconds into the period.

It was only the second career loss for James, who came in with a record of 44-1.

Baum also scored a pin and a technical fall as one of five Muhlenberg wrestlers - along with seniors Dylan Schwartz (165) and Jimmy Fratantoni (184) and sophomores Angelo Mahaffey (157) and Luca Colestock (197) - to reach the championship semifinals.

As impressive as Baum's upset pin was, Colestock had the most impressive overall performance, pinning his three opponents in a total of 2:43. He felled his quarterfinal foe in just 16 seconds. Fratantoni extended his school record with his 18th career technical fall, while Schwartz notched a pair of pins.

Senior Scott Schaeffer was alive in the consolation semifinals at the end of the first day, and freshman Jackson Karrat (141), senior Brian Jamison (165) and junior Tommy DiSisto (174) reached the consolation quarterfinals. Karrat, making his collegiate debut, recorded a technical fall and two pins after dropping his first bout.

Of the 22 Mules entered in the tournament, 20 won at least one bout.
