Mitch Carsley Leads Susquehanna in Overtime Win

Junior wide receiver Mitch Carsley recorded the first 200-yard receiving day since 2013 as he hauled in nine passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns including a 22-yard scoring catch in overtime as the Susquehanna University Football team came from behind to post a 30-24 victory over Dickinson Saturday in a Centennial Conference matchup in Carlisle.

Carsley scored on a 69-yard pass play in the first quarter as Susquehanna (3-2 overall, 2-2 Centennial) knotted the game at 7-7 after Dickinson (1-3, 1-2) had opened the scoring on the first drive of the contest.

The Red Devils added a field goal after a long drive that stalled inside the 10-yard line near the end of the opening quarter but Aaron Speight capped a 15-play drive at the end of the second quarter with a one-yard carry into the end zone to give the River Hawks a 14-10 lead at the break.

Dickinson regained the lead in the third quarter with a 42-yard scoring run.

Carsley scored his second TD of the day later in the quarter – this time with a 62-yard reception – to put Susquehanna back on top by a 21-17 score.

After a strip sack of freshman quarterback Michael Ruisch near the end of the quarter, Diickinson scored two plays later to take 24-21 lead heading into the final quarter of regulation play.

In the fourth quarter, senior Nicholas Brotzman took over at quarterback for the River Hawks and guided the team down the field on a13-play drive that ended with an Elijah Hoffman 21-yard field goal to tie the game at 24-24 with 6:26 left to play.

The Susquehanna defense stepped up allowing just eight plays over the final two Dickinson drive to keep the score tied as the teams headed to the overtime period.

In overtime, the Susquehanna defense held Dickinson again and forced a 38-yard field goal attempt that was wide right.

On the Susquehanna possession, Speight gained three yards on the first play before Brotzman scrambled and found Carsley along the right sideline for a completions, Carsley slipped a tackle and ran into the front corner of the end zone for the winning score.

Ruisch was 14-for-21 for 220 yards and two TDs while Brotzman was 5-for-16 for 68 yards in the fourth quarter and overtime. Carsley led the receivers and Speight gained 40 yards on the ground.

Jake Wiles averaged 48.0 yards per punt on seven kicks with a long of 69 yards and two landing inside the 20 yard line.

Defensively, Cole Dixon led the team with 10 stops with 1 ½ sacks, two tackles for loss and two pass breakups. David Simpson had nine tackles 1 ½ sacks and 2 1/5 tackles for loss.

The River Hawks return home Oct. 6 for a Homecoming Weekend matchup with Moravian College at 1 p.m. on Amos Alonzo Stagg Field.
