Women’s Lax Upended by No. 7 York

Spartans top Bullets 14-12

YORK, Pa. – Seventh-ranked York (Pa.) College ran off a six-goal run in the first half and held off No. 2 Gettysburg College down the stretch for a 14-12 decision in non-conference women's lacrosse contest Friday.

Junior Steph Colson (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley) led Gettysburg (11-2) with five goals, three ground balls, three caused turnovers, and six draw controls. Sophomore Courtney Patterson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) tallied a pair of goals and five draw controls.

York (11-3) was led by Meghan Fox's five goals. Regan Cook added four goals and an assist, while Kayleigh Phillips corralled six draw controls. Goalkeeper Charlotte Wright recorded 11 saves.

Patterson and Colson gave the Bullets a 2-0 edge less than 11 minutes into the game, but York ran off a six-goal streak to seize the upper-hand. Fox tossed in a trio of goals and back-to-back tallies by Caitlin Rankin made it 6-2 with 7:13 left in the first half.

Colson scored Gettysburg's next three goals as the visitors sliced the deficit down to 7-5 with less than three minutes to go before the break. Wright made a pair of saves in the final 1:27 and Cook turned in a goal to put the score at 8-5 at the half.

The Bullets opened with the first two goals of the final period. Senior Katie Landry (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) scored the first and junior Lauren Cole (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) tallied the second on a free-position shot to slice the deficit to one (8-7) with 26:23 remaining.

In a theme that carried on throughout the final frame, York answered Gettysburg's call with a pair of goals. The teams traded blows until a decisive three-goal run by the hosts put the advantage at 14-10 with 12:06 to play.

A goal by sophomore Liza Barr (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) pulled Gettysburg within three (14-11) with 11:33 to go. The Bullets were held off the scoreboard for the next seven minutes as York held possession. The Spartans managed to run off over four minutes until the visitors regained the ball with 5:25 left.

Landry found freshman Kerry McKeever (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) for a goal that made it 14-12 with just over four minutes on the board. Colson tracked down the next draw, but Wright posted a save on a shot by sophomore Ella Orzechowski (Elkridge, Md./Howard) to maintain the advantage. The Bullets caused a turnover with just over a minute to play, but a final attempt to cut the deficit was thwarted with a failed clear on the team's final possession.

Shots (32-32) and turnovers (12-12) were even. York held a 19-16 edge in ground balls, while Gettysburg won the battle in the draw circle 15-13.

Junior goalie Bailey Pilder (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) finished with nine saves, four ground balls, and a caused turnover for Gettysburg. Senior Ali Gorab (Southport, Conn./Ludlowe) and sophomore Claire Macatee (Street, Md./North Harford) each posted two ground balls and a caused turnover.

Gettysburg resumes its Centennial Conference schedule at Bryn Mawr College Saturday at 1 p.m.
