#8 Gettysburg Heats Up at Haverford

Bullets pummel Fords 21-5

HAVERFORD, Pa. Sophomore Jack Fletcher (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) and junior Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) combined for 17 points as eighth-ranked Gettysburg College turned in its biggest win over Haverford College in 17 years with a 21-5 victory Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (11-3, 5-1 CC) recorded its biggest margin of victory over Haverford (4-9, 2-4 CC) since a 24-4 shellacking in 2002. The Bullets allowed only one goal in the first half and tallied 12 of the first 13 goals in the game.

Thirteen players lit the lamp for the Bullets. Kolen ripped off four goals and added four assists to tie his personal best for points. Fletcher out-did his teammate by one point, scoring three times and dishing out six assists – all marking career highs. Seniors Blake Gray (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh School) and Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) and freshman Elon Tuckman (Princeton, N.J./Princeton Day School) each scored two goals.

Gettysburg's defense completely locked down the fords, forcing 19 turnovers and five failed clears. Sophomore Andrew Horn (Bronxville, N.Y./Avon Old Farms) posted three caused turnovers and junior Christian Atalese (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) came up with two caused turnovers and five ground balls. Junior Mitch Wykoff (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) tracked down eight ground balls and moved into sixth on the program's career list with 214. Freshman goalie Scott MacMillan (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) posted 13 saves in 53 minutes of action.

The Bullets were clicking on all cylinders offensively from the outset. Each of the team's first nine goals came off assists with Fletcher doling out the final pass on six tallies. After the Fords scored first goal to pull to 3-1 with 5:26 left in the first quarter, Fletcher dished it off to Wykoff for the junior defenseman's seventh goal of the season. Fletcher had a hand in six consecutive goals with five assists and his first goal on a feed from Kolen with 12:44 left in the second quarter.

MacMillan registered five saves in the second period and back-to-back unassisted tallies by Kolen and Tuckman gave Gettysburg an 11-1 lead at halftime.

The teams were even 3-3 in the third quarter and the Fords posted the first goal of the fourth to pull to 14-5. Freshman Joe Persche (Summit, N.J./Summit High School) won the ensuing face-off and took it straight to cage for his first collegiate goal five seconds later. Persche handled most of the face-off duties Saturday and finished 16-of-28 with five ground balls.

The Bullets ended the game on a 7-0 run with the first collegiate goals for sophomore Nick Cooper (Glen Gardner, N.JU./Gill St. Bernard's), freshman Ian Waresk (New Vernon, N.J./Madison), and junior Max Hall (West Orange, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy) to close out the game.

Gettysburg led in shots (52-34), ground balls (38-33), and face-off wins (18-12).

The Bullets are off from competition until a road trip to McDaniel College on Wednesday, April 24, at 7 p.m.
