Swarthmore Steals Late Win from Men's Soccer

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Ursinus College men's soccer team fell victim to a late strike by visiting Swarthmore in a 2-1 Centennial Conference setback on Wednesday night.

The Bears (5-4, 1-2) had erased a 1-0 deficit on Aidan O'Malley's goal midway through the second half, but the Garnet managed to get in behind the back line and Woojin Shin slotted home the go-ahead marker with 1:31 remaining.

The Bears had the better of the early stages, testing Garnet goalkeeper Max Kral with a pair of legitimate scoring chances in the opening minutes.

O'Malley delivered an inch-perfect cross with his left foot, sliding it across the face of goal for an on-rushing Tommy Mollis, whose first touch put him in position to shoot but allowed Kral to come out and smother the follow-up attempt.

Swarthmore, however, snatched a smash-and-grab lead in the 36th minute when Jonah Johnson won the ball and played in Freddie Lin for a shot to the lower corner of the net. It was one of only two shots during the first half for the Garnet, who managed to maintain their lead despite the lack of consistent pressure.

The second half opened up significantly, and O'Malley found the breakthrough, chipping Kral from the edge of the box in the 66th minute for his fourth goal in the last three games.

With overtime looming, Stathis Kalathias played a long ball over the top to Shin, who deftly brought it down with his boot and snuck a low shot past Tyler Lewin for the eventual game-winner.

The Garnet had an 11-5 advantage in shots, including 9-2 after halftime.

Lewin, the reigning Centennial defensive player of the week, finished with four saves.

Ursinus hits the road on Saturday to face Washington College, which jumped into the latest national rankings at No. 24 and is unbeaten in conference play.
