Filler Wins CC Golf Tournament

Muhlenberg senior Aine Filler closed out her career in championship style, shooting a 162 over 36 holes to win medalist honors at the Centennial Conference Championships.

Filler, who was the CC runner-up as a freshman, is just the second Mule to win the CC women's golf tournament, following Kimberly Snyder in 2007. Filler tied Snyder's school record for lowest two-round total at the CC Championships.

Filler's second-round 79 tied her career low, achieved once as a freshman and once as a sophomore. It was part of an incredible comeback that saw her gain six strokes in the final three holes.

Filler trailed Skylar Frankiewicz of Gettysburg by four strokes heading into the 16th hole in the second round. Filler shot a birdie – her only one of the tournament – to close to within one when Frankiewicz doubled.

"I drove my drive about 215 [on the 330-yard hole] but it was a little right," she said of her birdie. "I had 127 uphill into the wind so I hit a 9-iron about 15 feet from the hole and just sunk it!"

Two pars for Filler and a bogey and double bogey for Frankiewicz gave Filler a two-stroke win.

Filler began with double bogey but had only two more, both on unlucky hole No. 13, the rest of the tournament. She had a run of four straight pars in the first round and ended the first day with an 83, three strokes off the lead.

"I started the back nine pretty shaky [three straight bogeys] but I made a clutch putt on 14," said Filler. "I knew Skylar was going to be the one to watch out for and I kept asking my coach to check her score. She wouldn't tell me so I just kept playing and was ready for a playoff just in case."

Filler finished the year with a career-best stroke average of 83.5 and will graduate as the program's all-time leader with a career average of 84.3. The previous mark for a golfer who played more than one year was 91.1.

Led by Filler, Muhlenberg came in fourth, just one stroke away from third and an improvement of one place from last year. Junior Kat Hodges tied for sixth with a 176, and sophomore Katie Chen shot a career-low 120 in the second round.
