2013 Centennial Conference Field Hockey Guide

Preseason Coaches Poll | Record Book

Bryn Mawr (5-11 in 2012, 0-10 CC, 11th place)
Head Coach: Beth Riley (Michigan '07), 1st season
Team Page | Roster | Schedule | 2012 Statistics | Season Preview (8/28)

Key Returnees: Kayla Bixler, So, B, 5-3-13, 2nd team All-CC; Maddy Beckmann, Jr, F, 16-5-37, Honorable Mention All-CC; Ashley Arbuckle, Jr, F, 7-3-17.
Key Losses: 11th
Preseason Poll Projection:
Outlook: There's a lot of excitement in the air with the arrival of Riley as head coach. Beckman and Arbuckle will be counted on to lead the offensive efforts, while Bixler heads the backline with a year of experience under her belt. It may be too much too ask to reach the playoffs, but the Owls will be improved this fall.

Dickinson (7-11 in 2012, 2-8 CC, 10th place)
Head Coach: Caitlin Williams (Duke '08), 3rd season
Team Page | Roster | Schedule | 2012 Statistics

Key Returnees: Caroline Karwel, So, D, 7-3-17, Honorable Mention All-CC; Katy Schlechtweg, Sr, GK, .735 sv%.
Key Losses: Alex Boorse, F, 5-5-15; Tanya Bellingham, M, 6-3-15.
Preseason Poll Projection: 9th
Outlook: The Red Devils will be improved along the backline with the return of Karwel and Schlechtweg. Who will put the ball in the back of the net is more of a question after the graduation loss of Boorse and Bellingham. If Dickinson's newcomers can contribute immediately they will see improvements in 2013.

Franklin & Marshall (18-2 in 2012, 10-0 CC, defeated Haverford in CC final, 4-1; lost in NCAA 1st round to Eastern, 2-1 OT)
Head Coach: Melissa Mariano (Middlebury '04), 6th season
Team Page | Roster | Schedule | 2012 Statistics | Season Preview (8/27)

Key Returnees: Avery Koep, Sr, GK, .819 sv%, Honorable Mention All-CC; Meg Kelly, Jr, D, 3-1-7; Mary Kate Olson, So, D, 0-1-1.
Key Losses: Maura Hennigan, M, 4-2-10, 1st team All-CC, 2012 Player of the Year; Steph McDonald, D, 8-6-22, 1st team All-CC; Chelsey Talhelm, F, 5-7-17, 2nd team All-CC;  Kristin Zublin, F, 20-2-42, 2nd team All-CC; Diana Aulisa, M, 0-1-1.
Preseason Poll Projection: 1st
Outlook: After an extremely successful 2012 campaign, the Diplomats hope to defend their title in 2013. Replacing Hennigan, the 2012 Centennial Player of the Year, and three other all-conference team members will not be easy, but the Diplomats return a solid defense in Koep, Kelly, and Olson. If the Diplomats are able to find replacements on the offensive side they could be well on their way to winning back-to-back titles.

Gettysburg (12-5 in 2012, 7-3 CC, lost to Haverford in CC semifinals, 4-3)
Head Coach: Barb Jordan (Penn State '86), 12th season
Team Page | Roster | Schedule | 2012 Statistics | Season Preview (8/25)

Key Returnees: Liz Baron, Sr, M, 10-4-24, 1st team All-CC; Lexie Mowery, Jr, D, Honorable Mention All-CC; Erica Barbuto, Sr, M, 4-2-10; Emily Van Horn, So, D; Kristen Olenick, So, F, 6-1-13; Kelly Spieker, Sr, F, 3-1-7; Amanda Schlager, So, M.
Key Losses: Ally Duggan, D, 7-1-15, 1st team All-CC; Megan Feeg, GK, .787 sv%, 1st team All-CC; Hayward Sawers, 8-10-26.
Preseason Poll Projection: 4th
Outlook: Two years removed from a 7-9 season, the Bullets returned to the playoffs last season with a winning record and hope to do so again in 2013. Baron and Barbuto return to control the middle in front of Mowery and Van Horn on defense. Who steps in for Feeg in goal and replaces the scoring efforts of Duggan and Sawers could determine the Bullets fate.

Haverford (14-5 in 2012, 8-2 CC, lost to Franklin & Marshall in CC final, 4-1)
Head Coach: Jackie Cox (St. Joseph's '06), 4th season
Team Page | Roster | Schedule | 2012 Statistics | Season Preview (8/28)

Key Returnees: Bryn Bissey, Sr, F, 10-3-23; Sarah Waldis, So, M, 0-3-3.
Key Losses: Bridget Gibbons, M, 9-7-25, 1st team All-CC; Mary Hobbs, F, 15-11-41, 1st team All-CC, All-American; Christine Quake, D, 2-3-7, Honorable Mention All-CC; Alyssa Mayo, M, 1-0-2; Sydney Hyder, GK .732 sv%.
Preseason Poll Projection: 3rd
Outlook: The Fords reached the Centennial final last season but will have to replace several key players who graduated last year if they want to contend for the title again in 2013. Bissy will lead the offensive charge with Waldis controlling the middle. Haverford, which received votes in the national preseason poll, will make another run at the title this year.

Johns Hopkins (8-9 in 2012, 5-5 CC, 6th place)
Head Coach: Megan Callahan Fraser (Maryland '96), 17th season
Team Page | Roster | Schedule | 2012 Statistics | Season Preview (8/30)

Key Returnees: Elena Gresick, So, B, 3-2-8; Sarah Henderson, Sr, B, 1-1-3.
Key Losses: Maggie Phillips, B, 8-4-20, 1st team All-CC; Liane Tellier, M, 9-9-27, 2nd team All-CC.
Preseason Poll Projection: 5th
Outlook: The Blue Jays missed the playoffs for the first time since 2004 but look to return in 2013. Henderson and Gresick have the experience in the backline, but will need some newcomers to step-up to assist the team on offense. If the Blue Jays are able to replace Phillips and Tellier, the top two point-scorers from a season ago, they will contend for a playoff spot come November.

McDaniel (9-9 in 2012, 4-6 CC, T-7th place)
Head Coach: Melissa Miranda Jones (Longwood '99), 8th season
Team Page | Roster | Schedule | 2012 Statistics

Key Returnees: Rachel Cressman, So, D; Sara Reynolds, M, 8-2-18.
Key Losses: Paige Messersmith, M/F, 18-9-45, 1st team All-CC; Katie Corson, M, 7-11-25, Honorable Mention All-CC.
Preseason Poll Projection: 10th
Outlook: The Green Terror haven't made a playoff appearance since 2006 and hope to change that trend in 2013. Messersmith, the Conference's leading point scorer from last season, and Corson leave big shoes to fill on the offensive side for the Green Terror. Both Cressman and Kauffman gained a lot of experience in their freshmen seasons and the Green Terror will rely on them to lead the way in 2013.

Muhlenberg (9-7 in 2012, 4-6 CC, T-7th place)
Head Coach: Megan Eddinger (Gettysburg '01), 10th season
Team Page | Roster | Schedule | 2012 Statistics | Season Preview (8/27)

Key Returnees: Kayleigh Thies, Jr, F, 5-6-15, 2nd team All-CC; Mariah Alston, Sr, M, 1-3-5, Honorable Mention All-CC; Heather Porrini, Jr, B.
Key Losses: Kristen Dornenburg, GK, .798 sv%, 2nd team All-CC; Devon Barber, M, 1-0-2.
Preseason Poll Projection: 8th
Outlook: The Mules turned in a winning season last year and with the return of several key players they should continue to improve in 2013. Thies and Alston bring several years of experience to the front and middle of the field, respectively, while Porrini will control the defense. If the Mules are able to replace Dornenburg in goal and continue to make the improvements necesssary they have a great shot at a playoff spot this season.

Swarthmore (9-9 in 2012, 4-6 CC, T-7th place)
Head Coach: Lauren Fuchs (Connecticut '81), 6th season
Team Page | Roster | Schedule | 2012 Statistics

Key Returnees: Nia Jones, Sr, F, 12-4-28, 2nd team All-CC; Julia Thomas, So, M, 0-1-1.
Key Losses: Sophia Agathis, M, 5-5-15, 2nd team All-CC; Katie Teleky, F, 11-4-26; Allison Ranshous, D.
Preseason Poll Projection: 7th
Outlook: Swarthmore hopes this is the year they return to the playoffs after a 12-year drought. Jones returns for her senior year to lead the offense, but will need some assistance with the graduation of Agathis and Teleky. If a few newcomers are able to make an impact immediately, this could be the year the Garnet return to the postseason.

Ursinus (11-8 in 2012, 6-4 CC, lost to Franklin & Marshall in CC semifinal, 2-0)
Head Coach: Janelle Benner (Old Dominion '06), 3rd season
Team Page | Roster | Schedule | 2012 Statistics

Key Returnees: Megan Keenan, So, 10-7-27, B, 1st team All-CC, 2012 CC Rookie of the Year; Jenna Stover, Sr, M, 1-3-5; Samantha Macchio, So, F, 3-4-10; Danielle DeSpirito, So, GK, .740 sv%.
Key Losses: Catherine Bitterly, F, 10-7-27, 2nd team All-CC; Juli Pilla, M, 2-4-8.
Preseason Poll Projection: 2nd
Outlook: After an eight-year title run, the Bears were eliminated from the semifinals by the eventual champion Franklin & Marshall last season. With the return of several key players, including the 2012 Rookie of the Year, Keenan, and DeSpirito in goal, the Bears plan to reclaim the title in 2013.

Washington College (9-10 in 2012, 5-5 CC, lost to Ursinus in CC 1st round, 2-1 OT)
Head Coach: Rachel Boyle (Ohio '96), 12th season
Team Page | Roster | Schedule | 2012 Statistics

Key Returnees: Claire McAuliffe, Jr, F, 10-7-27, 2nd team All-CC; Jordan Mitchell, So, D.
Key Losses: Kristen Wille, M, 10-2-22, 1st team All-CC; Hilary Manion, M, 3-2-8, 2nd team All-CC; Erin Lewns, D, 3-2-8; Hillary Kane, D, 3-1-7.
Preseason Poll Projection: 6th
Outlook: After being eliminated in the first round of playoffs the last two seasons, the Shorewomen look to make it further in 2013. The loss of Wille and Manion in the middle will be hard to replace, but the Shorewomen do return McAuliffe, the teams leading scorer from last season. The graduation losses will be difficult to overcome, but Washington College is poised for a deep playoff run this fall.
