JHU's Birk & Brown-Scherer Named NFHCA First Team All-America; Five Honored

Complete NFHCA All-America Team

Five Centennial Conference field hockey players have been named to the 2021 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-America Team. Johns Hopkins secured two spots on the team while Dickinson, Haverford and Ursinus each had one player honored.

JHU's Abby Birk and Maddie Brown-Scherer headlined the five honorees as first-team selections. Dickinson's Hannah Spiri was the lone CC player on the second team, while Haverford's Ravenel Davis and Ursinus' Devon Carroll collected third team accolades.

Birk earns her second straight All-America honor after earning Third Team honors from the NFHCA in 2019. The NFHCA Region V Player of the Year, she finished second on the team in goals (11), assists (10) and points (32). Birk is the program's all-time assist leader with 34 career helpers and is also tied for fourth in JHU history in career points (92) and tied for eighth in goals (29).

Brown-Scherer garners her first career All-America honor after being named the Centennial Conference Player of the Year. She finished with career-highs in goals (13), assists (11) and points (37). Brown-Scherer led the conference in points and was tied for first in assists. A two-time all-region and all-conference pick, she is tied for seventh in program history in career points (82), tied for eighth in goals (29) and tied for fourth in assists (24).

Spiri becomes the first Red Devil since Merrit Davis (2015) and Kim Monteferante (2016) to earn the honor and the first DC player ever to earn second team honors. The CC Defensive Player of the Year, Spiri was also a major contributor to the Dickinson attack with team-highs of 15 points and six goals while also adding three assists and four defensive saves.

Carroll completes her decorated career at Ursinus with three all-conference honors and a pair of all-region honors to go with the All-American nod. An All-American for the first time, Carroll tallied 18 points behind six goals and six assists in the 2021 season. Carroll caps her career with 77 points behind 30 goals and 17 assists. She helped lead the Bears to four Centennial Conference Tournament appearances and one NCAA Tournament appearance during her five years on the team.

Davis becomes the fifth NFHCA All-American for Haverford and first since 2012. She tallied a CC-best 17 goals and matched Player of the Year selection Maddie Brown-Scherer of Johns Hopkins with 36 total points. Davis fired 75 shots and tallied nine game-winning goals in 2021, setting a Haverford program record and matching the CC record in that category as the Fords etched a 13-5 overall record.
