Hannah Spiri, Dickinson, Defensive Player of the Year

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Johns Hopkins' Maddie Brown-Scherer and Jane Wells, Dickinson's Hannah Spiri, and Washington College's Kat Esposito claimed major awards to highlight the 2021 All-Centennial Field Hockey team.

The Hopkins due of Brown-Scherer and Wells were named Offensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively, after leading the Blue Jays to their second-straight unbeaten CC regular season, a perfect 19-0 overall record and a third-consecutive conference title. Brown-Scherer is the second JHU player to earn the conference's top honor for offense, joining Beth Cariello (1993) in that prestigious club. Wells was chosen by her peers as Coach of the Year for the second time, with her other award occuring in 2017.

Spiri was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the first-ever Red Devil to garner a one of the CC's player of the year awards. A first-team pick at defense, Spiri secured all-conference honors for the second time in her career after being named to the second team in 2019.

Esposito collected Rookie of the Year honors following a stellar freshman campaign for Washington College. Also a second-team All-CC pick as a forward, Esposito is the second Shorewomen to receive the conference's top newcomer award (Kailyn Brandt, 2017).

Ten players were repeat All-Centennial selections, including four who have now earned all-star status at least three times throughout their careers. Gettysburg's Emma Bertrando and Bryn Mawr's Sara Rilatt earned All-CC distinction for the fourth time, while JHU's Abby Birk and Ursinus' Devon Carroll landed on the all-conference squad for the third time.

In addition to Brown Scherer and Spiri, other repeat honorees include Swarthmore's Chelsea Semper, Muhlenberg's Maleah Hess, Bryn Mawr's Maggie Titus, and F&M's Darby Klopp

Gettysburg has 48 first-team All-Centennial selections in the 29-year history of the conference. Johns Hopkins is next with 47, while Ursinus has 46 followed by Franklin & Marshall (43), Washington College (33), Swarthmore (21), Dickinson (20), Muhlenberg (18), McDaniel (17), Haverford (15) and Bryn Mawr (7).
