Centennial Conference Athletes of the Week - Jan. 31 - Feb. 6

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference winter championship season is officially underway, with the CC Wrestling Championship set to kick things off this Saturday at Johns Hopkins. Swimming teams have wrapped up their regular seasons with the CC Swimming Championships slated for Feb. 17-20 at Franklin & Marshall. Indoor track & field and basketball will wrap up the winter championships on the final weekend of February.

Last week featured the final CC wrestling duals of the season, while indoor track & field and basketball have a few weeks of regular season competition remaining. Highlighting the week was the performance on the track from Johns Hopkins senior Ella Baran, who set a new NCAA Division III record in the mile.

This week's CC award winners include Anthony Goeb of Dickinson men's basketball, Mackenzie Szlosek of Gettysburg women's basketball, Alex LaVeck of McDaniel wrestling, Joe Salerno of Washington and Lee wrestling, Jamie Moreland of Haverford men's indoor track & field, Ben Arehart of Muhlenberg men's indoor track & field, Ella Baran of Johns Hopkins women's indoor track & field, and Adria Retter of Swarthmore women's indoor track & field.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Player of the Week
Anthony Goeb, So., G/F, Dickinson
De Pere, Wisc. | Culver Academy (Ind.)
Goeb was a major contributor in the Red Devils 3-0 mark on the week, leading the team in scoring in each contest while averaging 18.3 points, 3.3 three-pointers, and 2.7 rebounds per game. He was the picture of consistency as he scored at least 17 points and played exactly 35 minutes in each of the three games. Goeb was nearly perfect at the charity stripe, knocking down 13-of-14 (92.9%) on the week. In Wednesday's win at Muhlenberg, Goeb went 6-for-6 at the line and also made a pair of clutch triples which put the Red and White in front for good, including his final three-pointer with 56 seconds left to give Dickinson a two-point lead it would not relinquish. Against Washington College on Saturday, he posted his second 20-point game of the season in the Red Devils' 78-69 win over the Shoremen. He has been a major contributor to Dickinson's five-game winning streak, its longest since the 2016-17 season.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Player of the Week
Mackenzie Szlosek, Fr., G, Gettysburg
Holtsville, N.Y. | Sachem East
Szlosek averaged 12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.5 steals and a block per game while shooting 54.1% from the field to help the Bullets to a 4-0 record last week. The freshman guard netted 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting (60%), seven rebounds, and two assists to help Gettysburg rally past Ursinus on Friday. The next day, she tallied 12 points, four rebounds, and four steals at Ursinus to keep the Orange and Blue undefeated in conference play. She is fifth in the league in field goal percentage (44.3) and 11th in points per game (10.6).

WRESTLING

Co-Athlete of the Week
Alex LaVeck, Jr., 165, McDaniel
Reisterstown, Md. | McDonogh
LaVeck went 4-0 on the week with a win-by-forfeit and three pins vs. Centennial opponents. After a forfeit win on Wednesday night at Franklin & Marshall, he recorded three first-period falls in a CC quad on Saturday against Johns Hopkins, Muhlenberg and Merchant Marine. He tallied a pair of 51-second falls before rounding out the day with a pin in 2:35.

Co-Athlete of the Week
Joe Salerno, Sr., 165, Washington and Lee
Princeton Junction, N.J. | West Windsor-Plainsboro South
Salerno produced a 3-0 overall record this week, all against conference competition. He registered all three wins via fall, setting a new W&L season record for pins in the process. He now has 21 pins this season, moving his overall record to 24-8 and his conference mark to 5-1. In a 38-3 win over Johns Hopkins on Friday, he pinned Jared Osbourne in 5:18. On Saturday, he pinned Ronald Grevera of Muhlenberg in 3:57 and then pinned Eric DeWald of USMMA in 0:47. W&L defeated the Mules 26-13 and then downed USMMA 31-9. Salerno is now just one pin shy of the Centennial Conference record for career pins (60) held by two wrestlers. Salerno currently sits at 59 pins.

Men's Indoor Track & Field
Track Athlete of the Week
Jamie Moreland, Jr., Haverford
Los Angeles, Calif. | Campbell Hall
Moreland clocked a personal-best time of 4:10.26 in the mile at the Frank Colden Invitational, the sixth-fastest indoor mile time in Division III this season, the eighth-fastest in Centennial Conference history, and the 10th-fastest in Haverford history. Moreland's time is the fastest in the Centennial by over two seconds and is tops in the Metro Region by more than five seconds. The time bodes well for Moreland's second consecutive qualification to nationals, as he was previously named an All-American in the mile after the shortened 2020 campaign.

Men's Indoor Track & Field
Field Athlete of the Week
Ben Arehart, Sr., Muhlenberg
Delhi, N.Y. | Delaware Academy
Arehart broke a 42-year-old school record by clearing 2.05 meters to win the high jump at the NYC DIII Invitational. The mark also set a meet record. Arehart's height is the fourth-best in Centennial Conference history and tied for the fifth-best in Division III this season.

Women's Indoor Track & Field
Track Athlete of the Week
Ella Baran, Sr., Johns Hopkins
Plymouth, Minn. | Houston
Baran broke the Division III record in the mile with a time of 4:40.53 at the Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge on Saturday afternoon. Baran was the only collegiate athlete in the Invitational race. Baran breaks the 17-year-old mile record previously held by DIII track legend Missy Buttry by over three seconds. Baran broke an eight-year-old Centennial Conference record (4:49.45, Sheena Crawley, F&M) and an eight-year-old Johns Hopkins program record (4:49.64, Annie Monagle, JHU), both by more than nine seconds.

Women's Indoor Track & Field
Field Athlete of the Week
Adria Retter, Jr., Swarthmore
Quakertown, Pa. | Quakertown
Retter finished first among Division-III participants and second overall in the shot put with a personal record of 13.40 meters at the Frank Colden Invitational. The junior currently ranks atop the Centennial and 10th in the nation after surpassing last week's previous best. Retter also had a strong showing in the weight throw with a third-place mark and another personal record of 15.02m.
