Centennial Conference Athletes of the Week - Apr. 11-17

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Now past the halfway point of April, Centennial Conference play continues to heat up in the majority of conference sports as championship season is nearly upon us. The CC men's golf championship will kick off spring championship season this weekend at Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa. Weekly awards were given out this week in baseball, softball, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, men's tennis, women's tennis, men's outdoor track & field, and women's outdoor track & field. 

Award winners for Apr. 11-17 included Matthew Cooper of Johns Hopkins baseball, Casey Murphy of Ursinus baseball, Gillian Zack and Cora Bridgers of Muhlenberg softball, Ewan Temple and Ryan Leahy of Washington College men's lacrosse, Roma Hladky of Haverford women's lacrosse, Lane Lambeth of Franklin & Marshall women's lacrosse, Karl Hoegstedt of Washington College men's tennis, Sammi Perry of Franklin & Marshall women's tennis, Arthur Beyer of Johns Hopkins men's outdoor track & field, Nick Galbraith of Ursinus men's outdoor track & field, Lina Spjut and Victoria Kadiri of Johns Hopkins women's outdoor track & field.

Baseball 
Player of the Week
Matthew Cooper, Jr., INF, Johns Hopkins
Chalfont, Pa. | Delaware
Cooper's bat helped lead Johns Hopkins to a 3-1 week in Centennial Conference action, totaling seven hits, eight runs and nine RBIs while manufacturing a slash line of .538/.682/1.231. Cooper added a pair of three-hit games, hit a double, a triple and two homers and also drew six walks for the week. With the Blue Jays trailing conference-leader F&M 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning of Saturday's opener, Cooper hit the go-head grand slam with two outs to propel JHU to the win and eventual doubleheader sweep. 
 
Baseball 
Pitcher of the Week
Casey Murphy, Jr., RHP, Ursinus
Merion Station, Pa. | Lower Merion
Murphy picked up a win and a save in two appearances on the mound for the Bears last week. On Tuesday against Muhlenberg, he allowed just three hits in seven shutout innings and struck out 10 batters. It marked his second double-digit strikeout performance of the season. Murphy also came in to record a save in the Bears 4-2 win over McDaniel on Saturday, striking out the only batter he faced for the final out.
 

Softball
Player of the Week
Gillian Zack, So., OF, Muhlenberg
Colts Neck, N.J. | St. John Vianney
Zack hit .467 with two home runs and five RBIs in a 3-1 week for the Mules. In the three wins, she was 7-for-13 at the plate and had at least one extra-base hit in each game. In the second game of the Franklin & Marshall doubleheader, Zack hit a solo home run in the first and a two-run homer in the 11th, providing the go-ahead runs in a 5-2 Muhlenberg win. She is the ninth player in program history to hit two home runs in a game. Zack also hit a two-run double in the Mules' 11-1 win in the opener.
 
Softball
Pitcher of the Week
Cora Bridgers, Sr., P/INF, Muhlenberg
Hamilton, N.J. | Steinert
Bridgers was 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA in two complete-game wins. In the second game of the Franklin & Marshall doubleheader, she pitched the full 11 innings, allowing only one earned run and tying a career high with 12 strikeouts. She also hit an RBI single in the top of the 11th. Bridgers tossed an eight-hitter at Dickinson in her first start of the week. For the week, the senior totaled 18 strikeouts and just three walks in 18 innings of work. 
 

Men's Lacrosse
Offensive Player of the Week
Ewan Temple, Sr., A, Washington College
Virginia Beach, Va. | Frank W. Cox
Temple scored a team-high nine goals and added three assists for 12 points in a 2-0 week for the Shoremen. He netted a career-best five goals and added an assist as Washington topped Swarthmore 9-8 on Wednesday for its first Centennial win of the season. Temple scored a goal in each quarter and his five scores and six points led all players to go along with three ground balls. On Saturday at Haverford, he led all players with four goals and six points as the Shoremen won 15-12. He scored two man-up goals and passed out a pair of helpers.
 
Men's Lacrosse
Defensive Player of the Week
Ryan Leahy, Sr., GK, Washington College
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. | St. Thomas Aquinas
Leahy went 2-0 with a 61.5 save percentage with 32 saves this week. On Wednesday in a 9-8 win over Swarthmore for the team's first Centennial win of the season, Leahy turned away 20 shots for a 71.4 save percentage in his third contest of the year with 20 saves. On Saturday in a 15-12 victory at Haverford, he made 12 saves and picked up a career-high five ground balls as the Shoremen were outshot 54-34, but came away with three-goal triumph.

Women's Lacrosse
Offensive Player of the Week
Roma Hladky, Sr., M, Haverford
Randolph, N.J. | Randolph
Hladky was instrumental for the Haverford offense, scoring a career-high seven goals and adding two draw controls while scooping two ground balls as No. 22 Haverford grabbed its first win over Washington College since 2013. Haverford is out to a four-game CC win streak.
 
Women's Lacrosse
Defensive Player of the Week
Lane Lambeth, Fr., M, Franklin & Marshall
Alexandria, Va. | St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School
Lambeth highlighted a strong defensive outing from No. 2 Franklin & Marshall as the Diplomats did not concede a goal until late in the third quarter during an 18-4 victory over Ursinus. Lambeth led the team in both draw controls (4) and caused turnovers (3), also scoring once with her only shot on goal of the contest.
 

Men's Tennis
Player of the Week
Karl Hoegstedt, Jr., Washington College
West Chester, Pa. | B. Reed Henderson
Hoegstedt went 2-0 in both singles and doubles for the Shoremen this past week against Johns Hopkins and Gettysburg. On Tuesday against 20th-ranked JHU, Hoegstedt, ranked 10th in the Atlantic South Region, topped Thomas Yu, ranked second in the region, in a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-8) singles win. Earlier in the day in No. 1 doubles, Hoegsted and Andrew Smith, ranked 11th in the Atlantic South, bested the Blue Jays' duo of Daniel Ardila and Rohan Reddy, 8-5. On Saturday at Gettysburg, a 7-2 win for WC, the junior topped Alex Kagan at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4, and at top flight doubles, Hoegstedt and Smith downed the Bullets' tandem of Kagan and Michael Zayneh, 8-2.
 

Women's Tennis
Player of the Week
Sammi Perry, Jr., Franklin & Marshall
Valencia, Calif. | Sierra Canyon School
Perry put together a perfect 4-0 week with two wins in doubles and two more in singles in Centennial matchups againsts Gettysburg and Bryn Mawr. Against Gettysburg, Perry registered a 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) win at No. 2 singles and teamed with Cassidy Landau for an 8-2 triumph at No. 1 doubles. Against Bryn Mawr, Perry cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles and an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles with Landau. 
 

Men's Outdoor Track & Field
Track Athlete of the Week
Arthur Beyer, Gr., Johns Hopkins
Rumson, N.J. | Rumson-Fair Haven Regional
Beyer repeated as Track Athlete of the Week after running top-11 times nationally in both the 800 and 1500 meters at the Bison Outdoor Classic. Beyer raced to a time of 1:52.22 in the 800, which ranks first in the Centennial and 10th nationally. In the 1500, Beyer crossed in 3:48.73, good for tops in the CC and 11th on the national list. 
 
Men's Outdoor Track & Field
Field Athlete of the Week
Nick Galbraith, Sr., Ursinus
Spring City, Pa. | Pope John Paul
Galbraith set a new Ursinus school record and posted the second-best hammer throw in Centennial history with a mark of 51.67 meters at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton. Galbraith's throw ranks 43rd in Division III this season. 
 

Women's Outdoor Track & Field
Track Athlete of the Week
Lina Spjut, Sr., Johns Hopkins
Cypress, Texas | Cypress Woods
Spjut raced to the 19th-best time in the nation in the 1500 meters at the Bison Outdoor Classic. Spjut crossed the finish line in 4:36.91. 
 
Women's Outdoor Track & Field
Field Athlete of the Week
Victoria Kadiri, So., Johns Hopkins
Lynn, Mass. | Phillips Academy
Kadiri broke the Centennial Conference and Johns Hopkins records in the long jump with a leap of 5.94 meters at the Mondschein Multis on Thursday afternoon. Kadiri's long jump narrowly edged the previous record set by former JHU standout Maya Hammonds (5.93m) in 2019, and ranks second in the nation this spring. Kadiri also won her flight in the heptathlon with 4,250 points, which is eighth all-time in CC history and seventh nationally this season.
