Centennial Conference Athletes of the Week - Sept. 13-19

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Week three of the fall 2021 season witnessed the start of Centennial Conference play in men's and women's soccer and several victories for CC teams over top-10 opponents, highlighted by McDaniel's victory in women's soccer over top-ranked Messiah. Weekly awards are listed below in the sports of men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's and women's soccer, and volleyball. 

Award winners for week three includeded Matthew Kleiman of Johns Hopkins men's cross country, Ellan Baran of Johns Hopkins women's cross country, Abby Birk of Johns Hopkins field hockey, Hannah Roth of Haverford field hockey, Alex Millones of Haverford men's soccer, Brendan Duffy of Muhlenberg men's soccer, Hannah Schepers and Jules Dotterweich of McDaniel women's soccer, and Juliet Young of Haverford volleyball.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Matthew Kleiman, Jr., Johns Hopkins
Concord, Mass. | Concord Carlisle
Competing against a Division I-heavy field at the Iona Meet of Champions, Kleiman crossed the finish line in 25:23.3, good for second place among 117 runners at the event. Kleiman set an 8K personal record by over 20 seconds, leading the Blue Jays to second place in the team standings. 

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
 
Athlete of the Week
Ella Baran, Sr., Johns Hopkins
Germantown, Tenn. | Houston
Competing in cross country for the first time since October 2018, Baran battled to a second-place individual finish among 115 runners at the Iona Meet of Champions, moving up more than five spots over the final mile of the 5K race. The senior captain finished the event in 18:21.5 to help lead the Jays to an overall team victory.

FIELD HOCKEY
 
Offensive Player of the Week
Abby Birk, Sr., M, Johns Hopkins
Louisville, Ky. | Sacred Heart
Birk scored a pair of goals in leading Hopkins to a 2-0 week. She scored in Hopkins 3-0 win over No. 9 Salisbury on Wednesday afternoon as the Blue Jays beat the Sea Gulls for the first time since 2008. Birk followed with a goal in Saturday's 4-3 over Christopher Newport.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Hannah Roth, Sr., GK, Haverford
Wilmette, Ill. | New Trier
Roth logged a pair of wins in the cage for the Fords, tallying nine saves and allowing just one goal in victories over Elizabethtown and No. 8 Rowan. She opened the week with four saves in the win over Etown, before posting a five-save effort in a shutout of No. 8 Rowan. The shutout was the third of the season for the senior. Roth has played every minute in goal for Haverford as the Fords have sprinted out to the best start in program history and are just one win shy of matching the program's all-time longest win streak. The shutout of Rowan was Haverford's highest-ranked victory since October of 2010.

MEN'S SOCCER
 
Offensive Player of the Week
Alex Millones, So., M, Haverford
Portland, Maine | Portland
Millones was instrumental to a 2-0 week for the Fords, notching three goals and one assist in victories over Arcadia and Dickinson. The sophomore began the week by scoring the opening goal and delivering a perfect through ball to set up Paul-Andre Coulibaly for the overtime game-winner against Arcadia on Wednesday. In the Centennial opener vs. Dickinson, Millones scored twice, including the game-winner, in a 3-1 win in Carlisle. 
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Brendan Duffy, Jr., GK, Muhlenberg
Freehold, N.J. | Freehold Boro
Playing with no margin for error, Duffy made eight saves without allowing a goal in back-to-back 1-0 shutouts of DeSales and McDaniel. He stopped a career-high seven shots in the CC-opening win at McDaniel.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Offensive Player of the Week
Hannah Schepers, Sr., F, McDaniel
Port Deposit, Md. | Saint Mark's
Schepers led the Green Terror to two more wins on the year, scoring the game-winning goal in each game. She recorded the lone goal in the second half of a 1-0 win over No. 1 Messiah on Wednesday before tallying a first-half marker in the conference opener against Muhlenberg.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Jules Dotterweich, Sr., D, McDaniel
Timonium, Md. | Dulaney
Dotterweich was a key piece of a backline that posted two more shutouts to run the Green Terror's season-opening streak to six straight wins - all by shutout. The week started by pitching a shutout of No. 1 Messiah on Wednesday before opening the conference slate with a 2-0 win over Muhlenberg. The McDaniel defense not only posted a shutout in the CC opener, but also held the Mules without a shot. The shutout over Messiah marked the first time the Falcons had been blanked since September 7, 2019. 

VOLLEYBALL

Player of the Week
Juliet Young, Fr., DS, Haverford
Guilford, Conn. | Guilford
Young had a standout week for the Fords as she tallied 72 digs, including a career-best 31 against Neumann, picking up the Neumann Knights Tournament MVP as Haverford improved to 10-1 on the season with three more non-conference victories. For the week, she averaged 7.20 digs per set in wins over Messiah, Neumann and Widener. Young currently ranks first in the CC in digs and second in digs per set.
