Centennial Conference Athletes of the Week - Sept. 1-5

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The fall 2021 season is finally here, and so are the Centennial Conference weekly awards. Rain washed away many of the scheduled openers last Wednesday, Sept. 1, but more than 100 contests still took place throughout opening week. This week marks the first CC weekly awards in the sports of men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's and women's soccer, and volleyball. 

Award winners from the opening week of action include Matthew Kleiman of Johns Hopkins men's cross country, Isabel Cardi of Dickinson women's cross country, Sophie Carroll of Franklin & Marshall field hockey, Mikayla Smith of McDaniel field hockey, Greyson King of Muhlenberg men's soccer, Sam Altman Farrell of Franklin & Marshall men's soccer, Hannah Schepers of McDaniel women's soccer, Laurel Buck of Johns Hopkins women's soccer, and Simone Bliss of Johns Hopkins volleyball.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Matthew Kleiman, Jr., Johns Hopkins
Concord, Mass. | Concord Carlisle
Kleiman picked up an individual victory in Thursday's Hopkins Kickoff Invitational. He finished the 6K race in 18:26.10, winning by 7.7 seconds over American's Russell Sullivan. Kleiman helped the Jays to a season-opening victory.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
 
Athlete of the Week
Isabel Cardi, Sr., Dickinson
Media, Pa. | Strath Haven
Cardi won the 11th Annual Galen Piper Cross Country Challenge hosted by Shippensburg on Friday night with a 4K time of 14:38.6. Cardi ran with fellow Red Devil teammate Elaina Clancy for most of the race, before breaking away down the stretch to earn an 8.7 second victory over Clancy. She was one of just three racers that finished in under 15-minutes Cardi outlasted the field that consisted of seven teams and 69 runners across Division II and III.

FIELD HOCKEY
 
Offensive Player of the Week
Sophie Carroll, So., M, Franklin & Marshall
Scarsdale, N.Y. | Scarsdale
Carroll netted the first two goals of her Diplomat career in F&M's 4-1 season-opening victory over FDU-Florham. The sophomore opened the scoring in the sixth minute, and gave the Diplomats a two-goal cushion with her second tally in the 31st minute. 
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Mikayla Smith, So., GK, McDaniel
Frederica, Del. | Lake Forest
Smith backstopped a Green Terror defense that pitched a pair of shutouts in its first two games of the season. She made five saves in the 1-0 overtime win over Randolph-Macon to lead McDaniel to two shutouts in the first two games of the season for the first time since 2004. 

MEN'S SOCCER
 
Offensive Player of the Week
Greyson King, Jr., M, Muhlenberg
Lancaster, Pa. | Manheim Township
King scored the first two goals of his career in a span of 12 minutes late in the first half to account for all the scoring in a 2-0 win at Scranton.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Sam Altman Farrell, Sr., GK, Franklin & Marshall
Severna Park, Md. | Severna Park
Farrell had a hot start in his first career appearance between the pipes for the Diplomats, making six saves in 91:12 minutes of a 1-0 shutout overtime victory over Eastern Connecticut State.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Offensive Player of the Week
Hannah Schepers, Sr., F, McDaniel
Port Deposit, Md. | Saint Mark's
Schepers led the Green Terror to a 2-0 start to the season with three goals and an assist. She tallied a goal and an assist in the 3-0 win at Catholic on Thursday before scoring twice, including the game-winner, in a 3-0 win over Lebanon Valley on Saturday.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Laurel Buck, Sr., D, Johns Hopkins
Oak Hill, Va. | Chantilly
Buck played a crucial role in helping the Blue Jay defense to back-to-back clean sheets this past weekend. Hopkins held Randolph-Macon and Mary Washington to just seven shots in the two shutout victories. Buck totaled 134 minutes throughout the two contests. 

VOLLEYBALL

Player of the Week
Simone Bliss, Gr., OH, Johns Hopkins
Claremont, Calif. | Claremont
Bliss posted double-doubles in all three contests to lead Johns Hopkins to a 3-0 opening week that included victories over St. John Fisher, No. 12 Juniata, and Ithaca. Bliss averaged 4.50 kills, 3.80 digs, and 4.8 points per set while hitting .254% and also contributing three service aces in the trio of victories, extending the Blue Jays' winning streak to 38 matches.
