Top-ranked Swarthmore cruised past Brooklyn while sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins fell to Penn State Harrisburg in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament on Friday night.
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- No. 1 Swarthmore advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth season in a row following an 85-51 victory Friday night over the Brooklyn College Bulldogs. The Garnet (27-1) shot 57.1 percent from the field while holding the visiting Bulldogs to just a 31.3 percent shooting night.
Five Garnet players scored in double digits again displaying Swarthmore's well-rounded scoring attack. Conor Harkins, who, after some statistical investigation, entered the night needing four points to reach 1,000, crossed that threshold with a 3-pointer in the second half and finished with 15 points. George Visconti also tied him for the team-high while shooting 6-of-8 from the floor and 3-for-4 from deep.
Zac O'Dell was remarkably efficient, cementing a double-double in just 18 minutes of play with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Colin Shaw and Ryan Ingram each shot 4-for-8 and finished with 10 points. Nate Shafer, who tallied six points and eight rebounds, reached 1,000 points for his career with that sixth point, a powerful layup with just over five minutes left in the first.
Swarthmore will face Ithaca College in Saturday night's 7:30 p.m. second-round game. Ithaca knocked off Babson College in overtime earlier on Friday night in Tarble Pavilion.
BALTIMORE, Md. -- Sophomore guard Donyae Baylor-Carroll scored a game-high 45 points, including 18 in two overtime periods, to lead Penn State Harrisburg to a 104-96 victory over sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins in the first round of the 2020 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament in Goldfarb Gymnasium Friday evening.
The win propels the Lions into the second round, where they will take on Yeshiva, which topped WPI, 102-78, in the other first-round game at Johns Hopkins today.
Johns Hopkins ends the season at 24-4. The 24 wins is one shy of the school record for wins in a season. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Blue Jays.
Tom Quarry led the Blue Jays with 31 points, the second-highest total of his career and his second 30-point game of the season. Ethan Bartlett had a career-high 24 points and 12 rebounds and James added 14 points for the Blue Jays.
