F&M 15th After Day One of NCAA Championship

WHEELING, W.V. - Franklin & Marshall's men's golf team is in 15th place after one round of the NCAA Division III Championship. Playing on the par-70 Palmer Course at Oglebay to begin the tournament, the Diplomats posted a team score of 302 (+22) on Monday.

Franklin & Marshall was one of the top scoring teams on the par-5s as the Diplomats were 2-under on those holes, recording the third-best scoring average of the round. F&M also carded 11 birdies which ranked them among the tournament's top 10 squads.

Jared Berlin (+2) is tied for 13th in the individual field after day one, just three shots off the lead. Berlin was one of three players in the field who is a tournament-best 3-under on par-5s. He was 2-over on par-3s and 3-over on par-4s. Berlin closed strong with an even par back nine and was 1-under during his last 11 holes.

Jas Fuhrer fired his fourth and final birdie of the round on the 18th hole and sits in a tie for 23rd (+3) after 18 holes. Fuhrer's four birdies ranked among the top five players while his 2-under score on par-5s was just one off the best in the field. Fuhrer was very consistent with 1-over front nine and 2-over back nine.

Jordan Hubal posted an opening round score of 78 (+8) while teammate Dominic Sculti was just one shot behind him (+9). Hubal was 3-over at the turn before coming home with with four pars. Sculti was at his best on the par-3s, shooting 2-over on those holes with a birdie on 13. Michael Gallagher was F&M's fifth score on Tuesday with an opening-round 81 that included a birdie on No. 14.

Day two will see F&M have the earliest tee times on the par-71 (6,857 yds.) Speidel Jones Course. Hubal will get the Diplomats started at 8:35 a.m. He will be followed by Gallagher (8:45 a.m.), Sculti (8:55 a.m.), Berlin (9:05 a.m.), and Fuhrer (9:15 a.m.).
