JHU's Joshi Advances to NCAA Singles Quarterfinals

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Johns Hopkins Vishnu Joshi posted a pair of opening-day victories to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship on Friday, headling performances from a trio of Centennial Conference performers. 

Joshi opened the day with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Zachary Portnoy of Skidmore to move on to the second round in the field of 32. Swarthmore's Charley Force also secured a first round win, toppling fourth-seeded Robert Liu of Claremont Mudd-Scripps 7-5, 6-1 to set up an All-Centennial second-round showdown with Joshi. 

Joshi went on to defeat Force in straight sets - 6-4, 6-1, and will now meet fifth-seeded Peter Anker of Wesleyan (Conn.) in Saturday's quarterfinals. 

JHU's Thomas Yu fell in the opening round to Aidan Drover-Mattinen of RPI. Yu trailed 7-6(4), 4-1 before retiring.
