Brown Takes Helm of McDaniel Track & Field Programs

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Ozzie Brown has been named McDaniel College's head men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field coach, announced by Director of Athletics Paul Moyer on Monday.

"As we conducted this search, we quickly identified Ozzie as a leading candidate," Moyer said. "After his time on campus, his passion for the sport became clear to everyone he met and we knew he could be successful at McDaniel. His vast technical knowledge across the sport disciplines is unmatched. He knows firsthand what it takes to be a successful Division III student-athlete and has translated that knowledge now as a coach. I am confident he can take our program to the next level, building our program into a contender in the Centennial Conference across the board."

Brown takes over the reins of the track and field program from Doug Renner. After 28 years of coaching men's and women's cross country and track and field, Renner relinquishes head coaching duties for track and field to focus his attention on the cross country program. He will remain on the track and field staff as distance coach.

Brown spent the last two seasons as the track and field head coach at Scranton, serving as the program's first head coach.

"I am excited to begin my new journey as the head track and field coach at McDaniel," Brown said. "I hope to build on the already rich tradition that the XC/TF program has. My goal is to help it become a top program on the conference and regional level. I'd like to thank Paul Moyer for the opportunity to coach at such a respected athletic program and I look forward to working with the rest of the Green Terror family!"

Brown led the Royals program from its infancy, including guiding Caroline Banas to All-America honors in the indoor high jump in the program's first season in 2018.

Last season, Brown guided a pair of Scranton athletes to All-Landmark Conference honors for finishing in the top-two in their individual events during the indoor season and three to all-conference accolades outdoor that included coaching Matt Kinback to the 800-meter championship. Kinback was also a UTFCCCA All-Mideast Region selection.

Prior to his arrival at Scranton, Brown spent the previous four seasons as an assistant coach at Stevens Institute of Technology, where he coached the jumpers, hurdlers, vaulters, javelin throwers and multi-event athletes. He also assisted with creating training programs for team members, weight training, recruiting and team schedules, as well as assisting the cross country team and working as an admissions counselor. While there, he coached Gladys Njoku, a national champion high jumper.

Prior to Stevens, Brown spent two seasons as an assistant coach at St. Lawrence, working directly with sprinters and hurdlers, assisting in the development of a strength and conditioning program, leading film review sessions and was heavily involved in the recruiting process.

Brown also spent two seasons as an assistant at Moravian from 2009-11, and one at Gwynedd-Mercy during the 2008-09 season. He worked with the jumpers and hurdlers in both programs.

Over his coaching tenure, Brown has coached 10 All-Americans and 43 national qualifiers.

A 2010 graduate of Moravian, he was a standout student-athlete. Brown was a five-time USTFCCCA Track or Field Athlete of the Year and two-time national champion, earning the gold in the indoor long jump in 2008 and the decathlon outdoors that same year. He was also an All-American in the 55-meter hurdles in 2007 and 2008.

His 7,192 points in the 2008 decathlon still ranks in the all-time top-10 in Division III history.

Brown earned his bachelor of arts in business from Moravian and earned a masters in educational leadership from St. Lawrence in 2013.

He officially assumes his duties on Aug. 1.
