Gettysburg Falls to No. 10 TCNJ, Concludes Season at NCAA Regional

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Gettysburg College softball team fought until the bitter end in the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional. The Bullets fell in the NCAA opener against No. 10 The College of New Jersey and battled back to capture two consecutive victories to play until day three of the NCAA tournament before being eliminated by TCNJ (26-4) on Sunday by the final score of 11-2 in five innings at Virginia Beach, Va., hosted by Virginia Wesleyan University.

Game Summary

  • It was a scoreless first inning until the Lions exploded with four runs in the top of the second inning to take the early lead.
  • TCNJ tacked on three more runs in the top of the third to push the advantage by seven.
  • Gettysburg claimed its first run in the bottom of the fourth as Baker knocked down her third home run of the NCAA tournament.
  • The Lions produced four more runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 10.
  • An RBI double by Moser in the bottom of the seventh allowed sophomore Giovanna Komst (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) to cross the plate for the second and final run of the season.

 
By the Numbers

  • Gettysburg had an incredible and memorable 2021 season as the team won its fifth Centennial Conference title and made its fourth appearance in the NCAA Division III playoffs.
  • Over the last four years, seniors Emily Colline (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) and Baker helped the Bullets to a record of 63 wins, capture the 2018 and 2021 CC Championship, and reach the NCAA Division III Regional Championship in 2018 and 2021.
  • Baker concludes her fantastic career in the orange and blue as the all-time leader in homers (17), second in slugging percentage (614) and fielding percentage (.994), eighth in RBI (96), and 11th in batting average (.367) in 105 career games.
  • During her outstanding four-year career, Colline accumulated a .344 batting average, 56 hits, 31 runs, 54 RBI, 10 doubles, and seven home runs in 63 career games. 
  • As a team, Gettysburg concluded the 2021 season with a .347 batting average, 116 runs, 175 hits, 101 RBI, 41 doubles, 36 stolen bases, and 11 home runs in 18 games.   
  • The Bullets played three games against top-10 nationally-ranked Division III teams this season.
  • Moser, Komst, and Baker all posted one or more home runs during the NCAA regional.
