EAST LANSING, Mich. -- After the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championships, the Marymount University women's golf team sits in 22-place on the leaderboard at the national tournament.
In its first taste of competition on the challenging West Course at Forest Akers, Marymount posted a team score of 362 (+74). Individually, MU was led by sophomore Hunter Gillis. The second-year talent fired a 77 (+5) on the 5,818-yard course to wrap up the first day in a tie for fifth on the individual leaderboard. Gillis was consistent across the front- and back-nine with scores of 38 (+2) and 39 (+3) on either side of the turn. Her opening round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-4 fifth hole.
Gillis's stellar performance was followed by Isabel Trojillo. The junior turned in a card of 88 (+16) which placed her in a tie for 89th. Trojillo's classmate, Janlynn Ngo, was hot on her heels with a score of 92 (+20).
Peyton Kraras and Gina Carvelli rounded out MU's performance. Kraras registered a score of 105 (+33), while Carvelli carded a 107 (+35).
After 18 holes, Carnegie Mellon University sits in first with a team total of 312 (+24). George Fox University is second with a total of 318 (+30), while Williams College and Methodist University round out the top four with scores of 320 (+32) and 321 (+33), respectively.
The Saints return to the course for the second round on Wednesday, May 12. MU's first tee time is scheduled for 9:15 a.m.
