Bullets Dominate Draw against McDaniel

Gettysburg wins season-high 23 draw controls in 19-10 win

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College owned the draw circle against McDaniel College, winning a season-high 23 draw controls as part of a 19-10 victory in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse action at Clark Field Wednesday night.
 
Sixth-ranked Gettysburg (10-1, 5-0 CC) established its presence inside the circle from the first whistle, winning each of the first six draws. Each win led to a goal with senior Kelsey Markiewicz (Taconic, Conn./Berkshire School (Mass.)) starting the scoring run 10 seconds into the contest. Markiewicz was one of six Bullets to score as the hosts opened up a 7-0 advantage less than 10 minutes in.
 
McDaniel (6-5, 2-3 CC) rattled off three goals to stem the tide, but Gettysburg answered with goals by Markiewicz and junior Mandy Buell (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) just 28 seconds apart.
 
The Green Terror closed the gap to four (9-5) with back-to-back goals by Samantha Barbeito and Allison Farrell. The Bullets out-scored the visitors 5-1 over the final 10:01 with a tally by junior Bridget Kenny (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) with three seconds left setting the score at 14-6.
 
The Bullets kept up the offensive surge by netting four of five goals to start the final period of play. The lead remained above 10 goals for most of the final 20 minutes.
 
Gettysburg finished with a 23-8 advantage in draw controls. The team's previous season high was 19 against Stevenson University in the season opener. Markiewicz and Kenny paved the way as each player tied a career high for draw controls. Markiewicz came up with eight, while Kenny corralled seven.
 
Kenny tied a personal best with seven points on four goals and three assists. Markiewicz logged five goals and one assist and is now just four points shy of 200 for her career. Senior Loren Pruitt (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and Buell each turned in a pair of goals.
 
Sophomore defender Emily Tropsa (Darien, Conn./Darien) scored a goal for the third-straight game and she picked up two ground balls and four draw controls. Freshman Caroline Jaeger (Hampton, N.J./North Hunterdon) finished with two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Freshman goalie Shannon Keeler (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) earned the win with three saves during the first 50 minutes of play.
 
Julia Jacobs led McDaniel with three goals, while Danielle Entrot and Barbeito each finished with two goals and two assists.
 
Gettysburg heads to Ursinus College on Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m.
