Cruz went 7-1 en route to a third-place finish and All-New York State honors in the 174-pound bracket at the New York State Championships on Sunday. The freshman recorded three pins and one technical fall in his first collegiate competition. Cruz's only loss came against top-seeded Dan Torres or Jamestown CC, a loss which he avenged in the third-place bout with a 6-3 decision over Torres to claim bronze in the 13-team event.
