Johns Hopkins Tops Women’s Soccer Preseason Poll

LANCASTER, Pa. – Following a season when three Centennial teams were selected into the NCAA Tournament, Johns Hopkins has been picked to win its 15th Centennial Conference title after a vote of conference head coaches.

The Blue Jays collected 10 of the 11 possible first-place votes and 100 points overall. Franklin & Marshall claimed second with 82 total points. McDaniel, the 2021 CC champion, grabbed the remaining first-place vote and 79 points to place third in the voting. Swarthmore was picked fourth with 70 total points, while Gettysburg (68) was selected fifth. Dickinson was tabbed sixth with 56 points, followed by Haverford (52) in seventh, Washington College (37) and Bryn Mawr (23) landed in the eighth and ninth spots of the poll, respectively. Muhlenberg (19) and Ursinus (13) rounded out the voting in tenth and eleventh.

The 2022 season kicks off on Thursday, September 1 with nine of the 11 CC teams in action on opening day. Conference play commences on Saturday, September 17, while the CC Tournament will open up with the first-round matchup on Tuesday, November 1.

In 2021, A trio of Centennial women's soccer teams, McDaniel, Johns Hopkins, and Franklin & Marshall received bids to the NCAA Tournament. This marked the sixth time that at least three Centennial squads qualified for the NCAA Tournament. This was the fourth NCAA tournament berth for the Green Terror and the first-ever run for the Diplomats.

Johns Hopkins secured the top seed in the CC tournament, after finishing a perfect 10-0 regular season conference slate. The Blue Jays fell 1-0 in the semifinals sending Franklin & Marshall to the Centennial tournament for the first time in school history. Hopkins received an NCAA at large bid upending Gordon and Amherst to make it to the Sweet 16 in their 19th tournament appearance.

Last season, second-seeded McDaniel outlasted fifth-seeded Franklin & Marshall 5-4 in penalty kicks to claim the program's first-ever Centennial Conference women's soccer crown. 

This fall 22 All-Centennial players from eight different teams and ten all-region performers will return to the field. JHU’s Rachel Jackson headlines the returners as a three-time All-Region and All-CC selection (2018, 2019, 2021). While Dickinson’s Meg Tate is the lone returning two-time United Soccer Coaches All-Region pick,(2019, 2021 2nd team). Four returners earned first-team honors including McDaniel's Katherine Carstensen, Jules Dotterweich, Franklin & Marshall's Meagan O'Callahan, and Katie Sullivan the 2021 CC Rookie of the Year also returns for Hopkins (2021 1st team All-CC, 2021 all-region). Gettysburg's Molly O'Shea and F&M's Sierra Brophy are back as all-region second-teamers, while Swarthmore's Alice Onyango-Opiyo and McDaniel's Jessica Weinoldt secured third-team honors.

Other returners with All-Centennial accolades include Swarthmore’s Veronica Gibbons (2021 1st team All-CC) and Kim Kockenmeister (2021 HM), Allie Zitelli (2021 HM), Dickinson’s Sarah Hughes (2019 HM, 2021 2nd team) and Emma Cooney (2021 2nd team), Hopkins’ Sophia Stone (2021 2nd team), F&M’s Hayden Wilson (2021 2nd team) and Mikaela Timmermans (2021 HM), Haverford’s Celia Page (2019 HM, 2021 HM) and Alyssa Saito (2021 HM), Gettysburg’s Grace Slevin (2021 HM), and Washington College’s Rachel Chatfield (2019 HM, 2021 HM).
