• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team saw its season come to an end in a 5-2 loss to Tufts in the NCAA Sweet 16 Sunday.
How it Happened
• Hopkins grabbed the first point of the match when graduate student Sophia Strickland and senior Anjie Kashyap beat Casey Cummings and Tilly Rigby, 8-2, at second doubles. Patricia Obeid and Maddie Suk then beat senior Dhanya Asokumar and freshman Ali Bader, 8-0, at third to tie the match at one. Sophomore Anjali Devireddy and Emily Javedan answered with a hard-fought 8-7 (8) win at first over Maggie Dorr and Caroline Garrido to put the Blue Jays on top 2-1.
• The Jumbos turned the tables in singles, winning four straight to come-from-behind to grab a spot in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Rigby tied the match at two when she beat Devireddy 6-3, 6-1 at first.
• Zoe Kava followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Javedan at sixth to put Tufts up 3-2. At the point, play was suspended due to lightning in the area and the match was moved indoors.
• After a delay of nearly 90 minutes, play resumed at Coppermine Racquet & Fitness – Bare Hills. Nicki Frankel gave the Jumbos a 4-2 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Asokumar at fifth. Cummings then clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Strickland at fourth.
What it Means
• Hopkins finishes the season at 9-1, suffering its first loss of the season.
• Head coach Dave Woodring concludes his career at Hopkins with a record of 176-45 (.796), including 97-0 (1.00) in Centennial Conference play.
• Strickland ends her career with 47 career singles wins and 58 doubles wins. She ranks 10th in school history in singles wins, fourth in doubles wins and sixth with 105 total wins. Asokumar ends her career with 34 singles wins and 38 doubles wins. She is tied for 24th in career singles wins and is tied for 19th in doubles wins
• Kashyap moves into 17th in school history with 78 total wins.
