ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Johns Hopkins doubles team of Kamila Wong and Jay Kiao and Swarthmore's Nathalie Williams secured All-America honors on the opening day of the NCAA Division III women's tennis singles and doubles championships at the USTA National Campus on Friday,.
In doubles, Wong and Xiao beat Yuu Ishikawa and Katherine Orgielewicz of Williams in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. This is the first time since 2012, and just the second time ever, that a Blue Jay doubles' team has advanced to the quarterfinals. With the win, Wong and Xiao earn All-America honors. They are just the third and fourth freshmen in program history to earn All-America honors in doubles. The duo will take on fourth-seeded Danna Taylor and Crystal Zhou of Carnegie Mellon in Saturday's quarterfinals.
In singles, Swarthmore's Williams posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Washington Univeristy's Karen Gao in the round of 32, before falling to top-seeded Olivia Soffer of Babson 6-0, 6-1 in round two. Williams became the fourth individual in program history and first since 2012 to earn All-American singles status.
Haverford's Ellie Esterowitz also represented the Centennial in the national tournament, bowing out to Shianna Guo of Chicago, 6-3, 6-3.
