Hopkins & Swarthmore Headed Back to Championship Match

Hopkins & Swarthmore Headed Back to Championship Match

Johns Hopkins and Swarthmore each posted convincing home victories in the Centennial Conference women's tennis semifinals on Friday, setting up a championship rematch for the third year in a row.

The Blue Jays will host the Garnet in Sunday's title match with the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.

In Annapolis, Md., top-seeded Hopkins beat fourth-seeded Franklin & Marshall, 5-0, to improve to 18-3 and advance to the conference title match.

The Blue Jays raced out to an early 2-0 lead before grabbing a hard-fought win at second doubles to complete the doubles sweep. Jay Xiao wasted little time in pushing the Blue Jays' lead to 4-0, losing just one game in a win at second singles (6-1, 6-0). Christina Huynh then clinched the victory as she beat Bellick 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot.

Hopkins will host second-seeded Swarthmore on Sunday in the Centennial Conference Championship. The match is slated for a 1:00 pm start at the JHU Tennis Courts. In the event of inclement weather, the match will be played at the Brigade Sports Complex in Annapolis, MD.

In Swarthmore, Pa., second-seeded Swarthmore defeated third-seeded Haverford 5-1 to advance to the CC championship match.

Starting off strong, the Garnet claimed two of the three doubles matches, carrying a 2-1 lead into singles play. Swarthmore performed even better in singles, seizing wins in three straight matches to close out their 5-1 victory. Nathalie Williams teamed with Erica Stutz for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles and also registered a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. Oviya Kumaran also picked up a pair of wins at the Garnet at No. 3 doubles (8-4) with Spencer Watts and a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 3 singles.
