  • In 1784, in a letter to his daughter Sarah, Benjamin Franklin expressed unhappiness over the choice of the bald eagle as the symbol of America, and stated his own preference: the turkey.
  • On Jan. 26, 1942, the first American Expeditionary Force to head to Europe during World War II arrived in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
  • In 1998, President Bill Clinton forcefully denied having an affair with a former White House intern, telling reporters, "I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky."
  • In 2009, the Muhlenberg men's basketball team made all 26 free throw attempts in a game vs. Swarthmore.
  • In 2013, McDaniel outlasted Washington College, 95-87, in the fifth three-overtime men's basketball game in Conference history.

Bill Nelson began his head coaching career when Jimmy Carter was in the White House. Six U.S. presidents have come and gone since then, but Nelson is still on the sidelines. During the past 37 seasons, Nelson has become one of the nation's most successful basketball coaches. The longtime Johns Hopkins head coach recorded his 600th career victory when the Blue Jays scored a 75-71 triumph at longtime rival Washington College Jan. 18. Nelson became the 18th coach with 600 or more wins in NCAA Division III history.

Popular Harrisburg reporter and television news anchor Dave Marcheskie (Ursinus '07) is leaving ABC27 at the end of the month, PennLive has learned. Marcheskie has accepted a job as the senior site communications manager for Three Mile Island, replacing the retiring Ralph DeSantis. Marcheskie's last day at the station will be Jan. 29. He expects to start his new role in mid-February. Marcheskie has worked for ABC since 2010, after previous gigs in Greenville, North Carolina and Comcast SportsNet. He began as a sports reporter for UCTV also wrote news and sports columns for The Grizzly, as well as playing football for the Bears.
