Men's Soccer Drops Thriller to Haverford

Men's Soccer Drops Thriller to Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Ursinus College men's soccer team fell on a pair of late goals by Haverford as the Bears went down, 3-2, in a Centennial Conference thriller on Wednesday.

With the game tied 1-1 in the final 15 minutes, the teams would score a combined three goals. The first, a strike from Jacob Helwig, gave the Bears the lead with a little over 13 minutes to play before a pair of goals by the Fords in the final 12:58 sealed the game.

Both teams traded shots early with Haverford taking the first shot four minutes into the game and then Ursinus responding 40 seconds later with a shot of its own from Helwig. Goalie Tyler Lewin fended off a corner as well as a ball that went off the crossbar. The Bears goalie was strong throughout the afternoon as he finished with a career-high 14 saves.

By the end of the first half, the two teams had fired 17 shots towards goal but were unable to find netting.

That changed four minutes into the second half. Braden Burns beat the defense to the end line and finished to put the Bears up, 1-0. The offensive attack from both sides didn't slow down after the first half. The lead held for all but 15 minutes as the Fords answered with a goal of their own to tie the score at one goal apiece.

Much like the first half, the shots kept on coming, but unlike the first 45, both teams capitalized on their chances. Helwig cleaned up his own rebound to once again give the Bears the lead only for the Fords to answer 20 seconds later with a header off a cross. Haverford kept the pressure on, firing the next nine shots and finally finishing on the 10th. The Fords took a 3-2 lead off of a corner with less than five minutes to play. The Bears tallied a pair of late shots but were unable to force overtime.

Ursinus was outshot 28-15 and 17-7 in shots on goal. Haverford also had nine corners to Ursinus' one.

Lewin's 14 saves were the most by an Ursinus goalie since Mike Alfieri stopped 16 shots against Franklin & Marshall in 2009.

The Bears close out the season on Saturday at Gettysburg.
