A program record four Johns Hopkins baseball players have been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III Baseball Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America Today.
Senior catcher Ryan Zakszeski was named to the first team, becoming the third Blue Jay since 2008 to earn the honor and the first since John Swarr (2010). Senior Adam Weiner was named second team, while senior Chris Wilhelm and junior Tyler Goldstein were named third team.
The Hopkins baseball program had previously earned at least three such honors in the same year just once, as the trio of Rob Pietroforte, Ryan Kealy and Jonas Fester earned the honor in 2008.
Zakszeski recently graduated as a materials science & engineering major with a minor in entrepreneurship & management carrying a 3.58 GPA. The senior catcher has worked as an intern for Dap Products Inc. and as a lab technician for the International Polymers Corporation. Zakszeski was third on Hopkins in batting average (.353) and tied for third in RBIs (36), while catching 16 runners stealing in 2013. He was also named D3baseball.com First Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region and First Team All-Centennial Conference.
A senior double-majoring in mechanical engineering and physics, Weiner graduated with an impressive 3.98 GPA. He has received a multitude of academic awards, including the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and the Charles A. Miller Award. Weiner led the Blue Jays with 13 stolen bases and nine sacrifices as the starting second baseman in 2013, and plans to attend MIT in the fall.
Wilhelm graduated with a 3.57 GPA as a biology major, and plans to attend medical school in the fall. In addition to gaining work experience at the Hospital for Special Surgery and the Winthrop University Hospital, the senior third baseman was a member of a number of volunteer groups at Hopkins. He led the Centennial Conference with eight home runs and was second on the Jays with 42 RBIs this season.
The lone junior among the selected Blue Jays, Goldstein holds a 3.60 GPA as an economics major with a minor in entrepreneurship & management. He has interned with Waveland Investments and Industrial Opportunity Partners, LLC. Goldstein (8-3) was the ace of the Hopkins pitching staff in 2013, leading the team in strikeouts (58) with an ERA of 2.58.
Sophomore Scoop Ruxin of the Swarthmore College baseball team has been named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All‐America ® Division III Third Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The teams were announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Ruxin received All-District IV First Team honors earlier this month to qualify for All-America accolades. He becomes just the second individual in program history - Jeffrey Clark '92 was a first team selection in 1992 - and 18th overall to collect CoSIDA (since 1987) academic all-America honors for the Garnet.
An economics/political science major from Lexington, Massachusetts, Ruxin is a second team All-Centennial player that played a critical role for the Garnet in the clean-up spot. This season he finished hitting .362 with 38 hits, seven doubles and 18 runs batted home - all were top-five marks on the team. A season highlight includes going 8-for-11 in a three-game conference stretch for three doubles, four RBIs and five runs to lead the Garnet to victory in all three contests.
Ruxin is the fourth Swarthmore student-athlete to earn All-America honors during the 2012-13 academic year, following in the footsteps of Peter Maxted '14 (men's soccer), Katie Lytle '14 (women's basketball) and Rebecca Hammond '13 (women's track & field).
