Academic All-America Football Team
The success of the Johns Hopkins University football team is not
limited to the Blue Jays' accolades on the field as junior
linebacker John Arena (Bryn Mawr, PA/St. Joe's Prep) and junior
offensive tackle Vincenzo Bonaddio (Garnet Valley, PA/Salesianum)
have been named to the 2012 CoSIDA/Capital One NCAA Division III
Academic All-America Football Team, which was announced today.
Arena was named to the first team, while Bonaddio grabbed second
team honors.
Arena and Bonaddio are the 16th and 17th Johns Hopkins football
players to earn Academic All-America honors. Of the 17, 15 have
come since 1993 under the direction of current head coach Jim
Margraff and 10 of those 15 have been honored since 2003. In
addition, Johns Hopkins was one of just eight teams in the nation
to have two players named to the team.
Arena, the seventh First Team Academic All-American in program
history and just the second junior to earn the honor, played in all
12 games with four starts at linebacker and finished third on the
team in tackles with a career-high 64. He also counted 7.0 tackles
for losses, 2.0 sacks, two interceptions, one pass breakup and one
forced fumble to his credit. He now has 115 career tackles,
including 13.5 for losses and 5.0 sacks. He earned Second
Team All-Centennial Conference honors this season.
A neurosciene major with the perfect 4.0 grade point average,
Arena is currently serving a Clinical Practicum and completing
Neuroprotection Research at the Hopkins Hospital Movement Disorder
Clinic, where he works closely with Parkinson's patients. He
previously completed a summer internship with the People's
Community Health Center, serves as an academic tutor, is the
secretary of his fraternity and a member of Nu Rho Psi
(undergraduate neuroscience society. He was named to the 2011 and
2012 Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll and was previously
named to the 2012 CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District Football
Team.
Bonaddio, also a Second Team All-Centennial selection in 2012,
was a key member of the Blue Jays' offensive line this season as he
started all 12 games at left tackle. He helped lead an offense that
is averaged 36.8 points and 485.2 yards per game. Both of those
averages are the second-highest in school history, while the Blue
Jays set school records for total yards (5,823), plays (954),
points scored (441), first downs (317), overall touchdowns (63) and
rushing touchdowns (47). The 2012 season also marked the first time
in school history that Johns Hopkins has averaged more than 250
yards rushing (252.8) and 230 yards passing (232.4).
Bonaddio, who carries a 3.70 cumulative grade point average and is
majoring in Public Health and Earth and Planetary Science, has
volunteered with JHU's Penn Lucy tutoring program with inner city
kids and JHU's JUMP program that fosters interaction between Johns
Hopkins athletes and local children. He has also volunteered at
Waggies by Maggie & Friends, a non-profit company whose mission
is to employ persons with intellectual disabilities.
