McDaniel Tops Gettysburg in Overtime

WESTMINSTER, Md.  – Senior Justin Davidov(Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter to force a tie at the end of regulation between Gettysburg College and McDaniel College, but the Green Terror converted a touchdown on the opening possession of overtime and held the Bullets without a score to clinch a 27-20 victory at Gill Stadium Saturday afternoon.
 
Gettysburg (0-4, 0-3 CC) rallied in the final stanza after putting up just over 100 yards of total offense in the first half, which ended in a 6-6 tie as each team's kickers booted a pair of field goals. McDaniel's (3-1, 2-1 CC) Spencer Wiersberg remained perfect on the season with kicks from 38 and 37 yards, while sophomore Justin Geisel (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) connected from 18 and 38.
 
The Green Terror led 20-6 with 9:07 to play following a fumble recovery in the end zone and an Isaac Murray 14-yard rush. Davidov led the charge on Gettysburg's next possession, hooking up with sophomore Kevin Benavente (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) for three passes totaling 58 yards before rushing the final 16 yards for a touchdown.
 
On the Bullets' next drive, senior Ryan Thompson (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) hauled in a 33-yard pass from Davidov and freshman Cole Menas (Keedysville, Md./Saint James) reeled in three consecutive passes totaling 26 yards to put the team on the doorstep of the end zone. Davidov did the rest with his legs, finding an opening inside the left pylon for the tying touchdown.
 
McDaniel opened the overtime session with Will Koester firing a pass over the middle to Andre Henry for a touchdown. Gettysburg was unable to answer with three incomplete passes closing the game.
 
Davidov finished 15-of-40 for 168 yards and an interception. He also carried the ball 15 times for 34 yards. Freshman Reggie JeanCharles (Galloway, N.J./Holy Spirit) gained 46 yards on 15 carries. Menas finished with four catches for 34 yards, while Benavente posted a team-best 58 receiving yards on three receptions.
 
Junior Mike McKnight (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) tallied nine tackles and three pass break-ups for the Gettysburg defense. Junior Jake Skinner (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) racked up eight tackles and a forced fumble and senior Dakota Brovero (Monroeville, N.J./Delsea) picked up seven tackles and a sack.
 
Will Koester finished 17-of-38 for 183 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Murray carried the ball 19 times for 97 yards, while Matt Cathey posted 45 rushing yards. Bamasa Bailor led the Green Terror with five receptions and 68 receiving yards. Dan Finelli led the defense with nine tackles and two sacks.
 
Gettysburg hosts Moravian College (0-4, 0-3 CC) next Saturday at 1 p.m.
