Muhlenberg Hands Gettysburg Loss in Home Finale

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Muhlenberg College spoiled the final home game for the Gettysburg College seniors and Head Coach Barry Streeter with a 39-14 decision at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium on Saturday.

After a scoreless opening quarter, Muhlenberg (6-3, 5-3 CC) turned in four scores in the second period to race past Gettysburg (3-6, 3-5 CC), which honored its 20 seniors prior to the start of the game. The Mules scored the final 10 points of the game and finished with over 500 yards of offense in the victory.

Senior Justin Davidov (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) set a personal high with 24 completions to 12 different receivers and threw for a career-high 280 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also picked up 21 yards rushing to become Gettysburg's all-time leader in rushing yards for a quarterback. Davidov finished the game with 1,148 yards and passed Matt Flynn '10 (1,128) on the career list.

Senior Andrew Major (St. Davids, Pa./Radnor) hauled in four passes for a career-high 88 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Juniors Mike McKnight (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) and Jake Skinner(Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) each tallied 13 tackles to pace the defense, with Skinner adding 3.5 tackles for a loss. Senior Frank Olmo (Eatontown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) recorded a dozen tackles, while classmate Nick Corbi(Medford, N.J./Shawnee) notched a personal high with 10 stops.

Freshman quarterback Michael Hnatkowsky completed 27-of-36 passes for 343 yards and four touchdowns for Muhlenberg, which moved into a three-way tie for third place in the Centennial Conference standings. Junior wide receiver Josiah Wright corralled six passes for 149 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the second half. Freshman James Diggs churned out 82 yards on 21 carries, while sophomore Max Kirin caught nine passes for 72 yards and a score. Junior Michael Blank led the Mule defense with 11 tackles and sophomore Kwasi Ampomah posted two sacks and a fumble recovery.

Muhlenberg completed a six-minute, 82-yard drive at the beginning of the second quarter when Hnatkowsky found senior tight end Stephen Dranoff on a short pass into the end zone. The Mules forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and needed just three plays to add another score to make it 13-0.

Despite reaching Muhlenberg territory on its next two possessions, Gettysburg was unable to score. The Mules tacked on a 26-yard field goal with 4:09 left in the opening half.

The Bullets made the most out of a personal foul on Muhlenberg on a third-down play in the second period. Davidov fired a pass out left to Major and the 6-7 tight end swatted away the defensive back on the way to the end zone for the team's first touchdown.

Muhlenberg quickly ended Gettysburg's next drive as Ampomah blind-sided Davidov and knocked the ball loose on the first play from scrimmage. The linebacker scooped up the loose ball and raced to the end zone only to have the play called back to the Gettysburg-39 on an illegal block. The Mules recovered from the penalty and Hnatkowsky fired a touchdown pass to Kirin to set the halftime score at 22-7.

The visitors fielded the opening kickoff and proceeded to run more than five minutes off the clock before Hnatkowsky fired a 19-yard scoring strike to Wright. Gettysburg answered on its ensuing drive, which was prolonged by a 23-yard pass on third down from Davidov to senior tight end Kevin Clayton (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven). Four plays later Davidov hooked up with senior Ryan Thompson (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) for a six-yard touchdown to cut the margin to 29-14.

Hnatkowsky hit Wright twice for 61 yards at the beginning of the fourth quarter, with the final completion resulting in a 23-yard score. A 30-yard field goal by Brian Goodwin on Muhlenberg's next possession set the final score with nine minutes left.

Gettysburg drove inside the Mules' 10-yard line twice in the final period, but turned the ball over on downs each time.

Muhlenberg finished with 157 yards rushing, while holding Gettysburg to a season-low 44. The Mules out-gained the Bullets 504-349 in total offense.

Gettysburg closes the season next Saturday at Franklin & Marshall College (8-1, 7-1 CC). It will be the 103rd meeting between the two programs and the winner will claim the Lincoln Football Trophy. The Bullets lead the series 48-47-1. The game will also be the last for Coach Streeter, who is retiring after 39 years at Gettysburg's helm.
