Two members of the Ursinus College field hockey team were named to the NFHCA All-American squad recently.
Senior forward Alyssa Thren was named to the first-team, while senior back Nicole Hanby was named to the second-team.
Thren, a two-time third team selection, capped her career as one of the most decorated Ursinus College field hockey players. In addition to being a three-time first-team All-Centennial selection, she was also a first-team all-region pick three times. She finished her career with team-highs in goals (22), assists (9) and points with 53. She also surpassed the 100-goal mark in her career in a win over Eastern Mennonite, becoming the first player in conference history to cross that mark.
Her 244 points (107 goals and 27 assists) is also the top mark in Centennial all-time.
Hanby, making her first appearance on the All-America squad, started an played all 22 games with seven goals and five assists for 19 points. She scored a season-high three goals, including the game-winner, in a 5-4 win over Washington back on October 19.
She was part of a defensive unit that produced seven shutouts, including a 1-0 overtime win over Salisbury that sent Ursinus to its fourth straight NCAA Semifinal .
Ursinus finished the season with a mark of 19-4 and won their eighth straight Centennial Conference championship.
A day after being named Synapse Sports All-Americans, the Franklin & Marshall duo of Becky Willert and Maura Hennigan have been named Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-Americans, it was announced on Tuesday. Willert earned first team accolades, while Hennigan was named to the third team.
Willert, a senior forward, became the first F&M player to win Centennial Conference (CC) Player of the Year honors this fall. She led the CC in points (63) and goals (29) and climbed her way up the F&M record books with her performance. Willert closed out her career ranked first in game-winning goals (13), fourth in goals (48) and fifth in points (102). She also ranks first in single-season game-winners (9) and second in both single-season points (63) and single-season goals (29).
Hennigan, a junior midfielder, was a driving force in the middle of the field for the Diplomats. She led the team and the CC in assists (9) and also added three goals on the year.
Willert and Hennigan helped F&M put together one of the best seasons in school history in 2011. The Diplomats won a school-record 17 games, earned their first-ever Centennial Conference (CC) regular season title, advanced to the CC title game for the second time and moved onto the NCAA Sweet 16 before falling to Middlebury, 2-1.
Senior defender Roxanne Jaffe has been named a Third-Team 2011 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-American becoming Haverford College's third all-American in the history of the program.
Last week Jaffe was named first-team NFHCA All-South Region for the third straight year and is a three-time first-team All-Centennial Conference selection. She scored a career-best seven goals during the 2011 season and added five assists for a total of 19 points, third-most for the Fords. One of Jaffe's two game-winning goals this fall came in Haverford's 2-1 regular season come-from-behind victory at Washington College in the second-to-last game in the regular season.
Jaffe exits the program as its career leader in converted penalty strokes (8) and games played (75). She ranks second all-time in assists with 28 to her credit and her 74 points stands fifth on the career points list.
The Fords' initial all-American selection in field hockey was Tracy Kyger who gained the honor after her senior season at Haverford in 1993. Last year Alex Waleko '11 become just the second all-American in program history.
Johns Hopkins senior Amy Wharton continues to add to her resume as she earned Second Team Longstreth/NFHCA All-America honors on Tuesday. She is the Blue Jays first All-American since Ariana Branchini earned Third Team honors in 2009 and the first defender to do so since Leah Horton in 2008.
Wharton grabs All-America accolades after earning First Team All-Centennial Conference and NFHCA All-South honors. She is a three-time All-Centennial Conference and NFHCA All-Region selection and was named to the NFHCA Senior All-Star game earlier this year. Wharton started all 18 games on defense this season and made 67 starts in her four-year career. She scored three goals, dished out four assists and made five defensive saves in her career. She led a Blue Jay defense that posted a 2.11 goals against average to rank fifth in the Centennial Conference, while JHU also ranked fourth in shutouts (3) this season.
Wharton is tied for ninth in school history in career defensive saves, tied for 12th in games started and tied for 14th in games played (74). Wharton helped the Blue Jays to 50 wins in her career, two Centennial Conference Tournament finals and the NCAA Tournament in 2008.
Johns Hopkins has produced 13 NFHCA All-Americans since 1987, including nine under head coach Megan Fraser.
