• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins field hockey team rallied for the second straight game and beat fifth-seeded Haverford, 2-1, in overtime in the Centennial Conference semifinals Friday at Homewood Field.
How it Happened
• Haverford took the early lead as the Fords capitalized on one of their three penalty corners. Stephanie Terrell inserted the corner to the top of the circle. Caroline Aronowitz stopped the ball and passed it to Alissa Valentine who ripped a low shot from 14 yards out. The ball slipped through several players and just crossed the goal line by the left post at 9:03.
• The Fords nearly made it a 2-0 game with 9:54 to play when Paige Carson found herself in a one-on-one with sophomore goalie Jodie Baris. Baris came out to make the save and keep the deficit at one. As it turned out, that was a big save for the Blue Jays.
• In a situation similar to their last game, when they scored with 4:25 to play to tie the Diplomats on Saturday, the Blue Jays would score with just 3:59 to play to tie it. Hopkins drew a corner and senior Clare Kavanagh inserted for the Blue Jays. She sent the ball up top to sophomore Katie McErlean, who fired a rocket past Danielle Rette to level the score at 1-1.
• After battling for 70 minutes, the teams would need overtime to decide who would advance to overtime. And as it played out, it would only take 95 seconds to see a winner.
• Hopkins drew a pair of corners early in the first overtime period and the second one did the trick. Freshman Seema Sajjan inserted the corner to McErlean, who passed to senior Francesca Cali. She fired a shot from the left side and senior Morgan Pothast lifted it over Rette and into the Fords’ cage just 1:35 into overtime.
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 30-9-1 all-time against Haverford, including 2-0 this season. The Blue Jays beat the Fords in overtime for the first time in series history.
• Hopkins advances to the Centennial Conference title game for the first time 2009. JHU is 2-6 all-time in the championship game. Hopkins last won the Centennial Conference Tournament title in 2003.
• The Blue Jays have now come-from-behind to win five times this season. Three of those wins came in overtime and the final score in four of those games was 2-1.
• Hopkins is now 7-1 this season in one-goal games.
Inside the Box Score
• Pothast’s goal was her sixth of the season and 26th of her career. She is tied for ninth in program history in career goals and is 14th in career points with 60. She is the first player with 60 or more points since Andrea Vandersall ’10 finished her career with 67. The game-winner was Pothast’s third career overtime goal, a Hopkins record.
• Kavanagh’s assist was the 11th of her career, which is tied for 23rd in school history. She also now ranks 18th with 55 career points.
