Bullets Drop Opener at Ramapo

MAHWAH, N.J. The Gettysburg College field hockey team came up short in its season debut with a 1-0 setback at Ramapo College Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (0-1) challenged the goal often, but Ramapo's (1-0) defense held the Bullets at bay with 20 total saves, including 19 by goalie Emily Wisneski.

Senior Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) made the game's first save just past the three-minute mark. Wisneski turned away the first shot she saw soon after and finished with nine stops in the first half. Five of those came during a six-minute stretch just past the mid-point of the opening period, including three saves on shots by sophomore Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington).

The Roadrunners challenged Mowery early in the second period, but the Gettysburg goalie was up to the task with back-to-back stops. The hosts finally cracked the egg on a penalty stroke by Gianna Mouskourie at 49:11.

The Bullets continued to attack and put four shots on goal in the final six minutes of play. Wisneski turned away each try to preserve the win.

Mowery posted nine saves for Gettysburg, which finished with a 22-12 advantage in shots.

Gettysburg resumes action at Catholic University on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at 5 p.m.
