Quick Start Lifts Catholic Past Gettysburg

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholic University scored a pair of goals in the opening 13:15 and that proved to be the difference in a 4-2 decision over visiting Gettysburg College in a non-conference field hockey contest on Tuesday.

Catholic (1-1) tested the Gettysburg (0-2) goal in the opening minute, but Marisa Martinelli's shot was prevented from going into the cage by sophomore defender Brooke Matthews (Rye, N.J./Portsmouth).

The Cardinals cracked the scoring column in the 12th minute on a shot by Katie Anderson. Less than two minutes later, Martinelli hit the back of the goal to make it 2-0.

Gettysburg sliced the deficit in half with a goal from sophomore Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) that ricocheted off the goalie into the cage. Soares tried to tie it just over a minute later, but her attempt was thwarted by goalie Sophia Hamilton.

Matthews made her second defensive save in the 28th minute to preserve the one-goal deficit.

Catholic went on the attack early in the second period and fired off five shots on goal in the first 10 minutes. Senior Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) knocked away the first four, but Jess Waite corralled the last rebound and poked it into the goal for a 3-1 lead.

The Bullets countered with their own rebound in the 49th minute as senior Casey Eck (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) slapped the ball home to cut the margin to 3-2.

The Cardinals held Gettysburg without another shot on goal over the final 20 minutes. Anderson added her second goal on an assist by Hannah Schied at 57:23.

Catholic finished with a 22-15 lead in shots and a 13-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Mowery finished with 11 saves for the Bullets. Soares led the attack with three shots.

Gettysburg continues its non-conference road trip with a visit to Cabrini College this Saturday, Sept. 9, at noon.
