Cavicchio Sinks No. 15 Ursinus in Double OT

Cavicchio Sinks No. 15 Ursinus in Double OT

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman Allison Cavicchio(Medford, N.J./Shawnee) scored on her own rebound in the 98th minute to lift Gettysburg College past 15th-ranked Ursinus College 2-1 in Centennial Conference field hockey action at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

Playing in its fifth consecutive overtime game this fall, Gettysburg (3-4, 2-1 CC) earned its first win over a nationally-ranked foe since beating then-No. 8 Ursinus (4-4, 2-1 CC) in 2012. It was only the Bullets' second win over the Bears since 1960 and it was the first overtime affair between the programs since 1982.

Ursinus went on the attack early, but the visitors found the going difficult against senior goalie Haley Mowery(Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern), who posted two of her game-high 12 saves in the opening 10 minutes of action. The Bears managed to get on the board in the 24th minute on a goal by Brooke Overly.

Gettysburg's defense held Ursinus, which had put up seven goals against Swarthmore College in its last outing, without another goal. Mowery played a big role with eight total saves in the second period and first overtime period, including stopping a penalty stroke by Bridget Sherry in the 46th minute.

Freshman Grace Torrance (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) provided the game-tying goal on a penalty stroke in the 40th minute. Despite a 10-1 advantage in penalty corners in the second half, Ursinus was unable to find a way past the Gettysburg defense before the end of regulation.

The Bears pressed the advantage in the first overtime, but Mowery stopped four shots and was helped out with defensive saves by Torrance and senior Lily Neibart (Morristown, N.J./Pingry) to keep the deadlock.

In the second overtime, Ursinus continued to drive to the cage and forced three penalty corners. Mowery stopped a pair of shots and the tide quickly turned in the final minutes. Following a stop by the defense, Gettysburg drove the ball up the field and Cavicchio fired a shot on goal that was stopped by Jules Singer. The Bullet first-year went right after the ball and stroked a bouncing shot from the right into the cage for the game-winning score. It was Cavicchio's third goal of the season.

Ursinus finished with a 25-9 lead in shots and an 18-3 advantage in penalty corners. Cavicchio and freshman Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) each took four shots.
