GRANTHAM, Pa. – Junior defender Brooke Matthews(Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) tied the program's single-game defensive saves record and senior goalie Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) became the fourth Gettysburg College player with 400 career saves during a 6-1 loss to top-ranked and defending national champion Messiah College Wednesday night.
 
Messiah (10-0) won its 32nd consecutive game by keeping Gettysburg (5-5) busy with 43 shots. The loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Bullets.
 
Mowery finished one save shy of her personal best with 18 and she was helped out with four defensive saves by her teammates. Matthews accounted for three of those stops, tying the program's single-game record set by Emily Van Horn '16 against Johns Hopkins University in 2015. Freshman Maeve Dwyer (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) also posted a defensive save.
 
Messiah did most of its damage in the opening half with five goals. Carissa Gehman had a hand in three, tallying two herself and handing out an assist. Matthews posted two defensive saves in the final 10 minutes of the second period.
 
Matthews tied the defensive saves record on a shot by Gehman in the 48th minute. Gettysburg hit the scoreboard 12 minutes later when freshman Tamlin Unruh (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) scored her first collegiate goal.
 
Mowery vaulted up the all-time saves list into third with her performance. She trails Lisa De Banico '84 by just three saves for second. Kelli Agnew '93 is Gettysburg's all-time saves leader with 460.
 
Gettysburg returns to its Centennial Conference schedule at home this Saturday against Haverford College at 1 p.m.
