Bullets Fall to Mules in Double OT

ALLENTOWN, Pa. A war of attrition between Gettysburg College and Muhlenberg College finally saw an end as the Mules scored the game-winning goal with 1:33 left in the second overtime to pull out a 1-0 victory at Scotty Wood Stadium.

Playing in its sixth overtime game of the season and third to go to double overtime, Gettysburg (6-7, 4-3 CC) suffered its first loss to an unranked team since Sept. 16. Muhlenberg (3-9, 2-5 CC) had a pair of shots on goal in the first half, but senior goalie Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) thwarted both attempts.

The Bullets mustered their first shot on goal early in the second half as freshman Victoria Ritson-Parsons (Barrington, R.I./Moses Brown) was stopped by Muhlenberg keeper Jordan Segrave in the 41st minute. Freshman Maeve Dwyer (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) kept the Mules off the board with a defensive save just two minutes later.

In the final 10 minutes of regulation, both teams took shots at the cage. Freshman Arden Scheetz (Phoenix, Md./Notre Dame Prep) was denied a goal by defender Alyssa Scott in the 62nd minute, while Mowery turned away an attempt by Courtney Allen with 30 seconds left.

The game remained scoreless through the first extra period. Mowery posted a pair of saves, while Segrave stopped senior Lindsay Kraus (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) in the 78th minute.

Gettysburg tallied three shots on goal in less than a minute, but Segrave picked up three stops, including on back-to-back attempts by freshman Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) in double overtime. Muhlenberg pushed the ball up the field in the final two minutes and capitalized on its final opportunity. Rachel Richards saw her first two shots stopped by Mowery, but her third try following a pass by Alexandria DeAngelo bounced inside the left post in the 99th minute.

Shots were even at 15 apiece, while Gettysburg held a 10-9 lead in penalty corners. Mowery finished with nine saves for the Bullets.

Gettysburg resumes play at Swarthmore College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
