2017 Gettysburg Field Hockey Season Recap

2017 Gettysburg Field Hockey Season Recap

Season Summary
Overall Record: 7-9
Centennial Conference Record/Finish: 5-5/T-5th

Gettysburg embarked on another challenging campaign against some of the top teams in the country. The Bullets just missed the .500 mark with five setbacks coming by a lone goal. The team set a new program standard for overtime games with seven, including five in a row early in the campaign. Gettysburg tied for fifth in the Centennial Conference, but lost the tiebreaker for a spot in the postseason.

Top Team Performance
2-1 Win over No. 15 Ursinus – Sept. 23 at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium

Gettysburg secured its first win over a nationally-ranked team in five seasons with a 2-1 double-overtime decision against No. 15 Ursinus. The Bears struck for the only goal in the first half, but freshman Grace Torrance (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) provided the equalizer on a penalty stroke in the 40th minute. In the first overtime, senior goalie Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) logged four saves and both Torrance and senior Lily Neibart(Morristown, N.J./Pingry) recorded defensive stops to keep the deadlock. Ursinus pressured the goal in the second extra period, but Gettysburg weathered the barrage and drove the ball up the field. Freshman Allison Cavicchio(Medford, N.J./Shawnee) corralled her own rebound and slapped the ball into the cage to end the game. Mowery anchored a sterling defensive effort by the Bullets with a dozen saves.

Top Individual Performance
Lily Neibart '18

Senior captain Lily Neibart did not rack up a lot of stats out of the midfield, but her contributions were felt wholeheartedly on both sides of the ball. She started all but one game and finished with three assists and a defensive save. Neibart played a key role in the team's transition game up the field and she was a stalwart defender around the scoring area. She did not miss a single game during her four years at Gettysburg, finishing with 64 games played, two goals, nine assists, and two defensive saves.

Breakout Performer
Emma Bertrando '21

Freshman Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) was Gettysburg's top offensive contributor in her debut season. She started all 16 games and finished with team highs for goals (7), points (15), and shots (66). Bertrando scored a goal in three consecutive games at one point in the season and she tallied two goals in three separate outings. Her goal total was the best by a Gettysburg first-year since Hannah Fitzgerald '17 scored 10 in 2013.

By The Numbers
Extra, Extra:  Gettysburg played more overtime games this season than any other campaign in program history. The team's seven overtime contests bested the previous mark of five set in 1996 and 1999. The Bullets played five consecutive overtime contests at one point and four went to double-overtime.

Career Saves: Senior Haley Mowery finished just two saves shy of the program's career mark. The goalie turned in a career year with personal highs for saves (146) and save percentage (.816) to go with a career-low goals against average of 1.88. With 458 career stops, Mowery became the first Bullet in 23 years to eclipse 400 in a career.

Defensive Saves: Junior Brooke Matthews (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) posted nine defensive saves this season, which is the second-best total in program history. Matthews tied the program's single-game mark with three stops against No. 1 Messiah and she tallied two defensive saves against Catholic. She is tied for third at Gettysburg with 13 career defensive saves.

First Year: Senior Jamie Relin (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) played her first season with the field hockey team this fall. A three-year letterwinner with the women's basketball team, Relin picked up the stick this fall and emerged as a consistent contributor, appearing in all 16 games and starting each of her last 10. She scored her first collegiate goal against Stevenson and added two more as the season went on.
