A Hoops Weekend Primer

A Hoops Weekend Primer

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The top three seeds for the championship are set. Johns Hopkins is the top seed and will host the semifinals and final next Friday and Saturday in Baltimore. Franklin & Marshall and Muhlenberg will be the next two seeds in some order and will meet in one semifinal. Ursinus needs a win at home against the Mules to lock up the #4 seed and the right to host the #5 seed in a first-round game on Wednesday. A loss opens the door for Haverford to sneak in and take the 4-spot with a win at Swarthmore. Losses by both gives the Bears the #4 seed and brings Washington College back into the picture. The Shorewomen need a win at home against Bryn Mawr and a Gettysburg win at McDaniel to force a three-way tiebreaker with the Bullets and Haverford. That tiebreaker favors Washington College with a 3-1 record against the other two. A Haverford-Washington tie favors the Fords, who split the season set with the Shorewomen but swept first-place Johns Hopkins.

Muhlenberg at Ursinus
The Mules (14-5 CC, 19-5) travel to Collegeville, looking to extend their seven-game win streak against the Bears (12-7, 13-11). Ursinus has not defeated 'Berg at Helfferich Hall since 2007 (67-56, OT). Muhlenberg won the first meeting by a 72-55 count on Jan. 18.

Haverford at Swarthmore
There is one thing to understand about this rivalry - if the Garnet (7-12, 9-14) cannot make the playoffs, there is nothing it would rather do more than prevent the Fords (11-8, 16-8) from doing the same - and vice versa. Haverford controls its destiny but needs to reverse a trend that has seen Swarthmore win eight of the last nine games in the series, including a 71-57 decision at Tarble on Jan. 18. The Fords' win in that stretch, however, was last year along Crum Creek, 62-41.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

The top spot is already secure in the hands of Franklin & Marshall and the semifinals and final will be in Lancaster for the fourth consecutive season next Friday and Saturday. The other four teams are also booked, although their seeds are still up for grabs on Saturday. Dickinson has a first-round bye, while a Muhlenberg win at Ursinus would give the Mules the other bye. A Red Devil loss, combined with a 'Berg victory, would boost Muhlenberg into the 2-spot. A loss by the Mules opens the door for Johns Hopkins to slide into a first-round bye with a win at Washington College. A Shoremen win gives WAC a season sweep of the Blue Jays and, combined with an Ursinus win, would give Washington a first-round bye. In that scenario, Muhlenberg would host Johns Hopkins in a first-round contest in Allentown on Wednesday.

Franklin & Marshall at Dickinson
It's a rematch of the 2011 Centennial final as the 13th ranked Diplomats (15-2, 22-2) travel to Carlisle to take on the Red Devils (11-6, 14-10). F&M won the first meeting of the year on Jan. 18 by a 65-62 count and leads the all-time series, 105-65. Dickinson upended the Diplomats in the regular-season finale last season at Mayser and hopes to repeat the feat Saturday.

Muhlenberg at Ursinus
The last four games between the Mules (10-7, 16-8) and Bears (8-9, 9-15) at Helfferich Hall have seen one decided by a single point and two others that have needed overtime to determine a winner. Could the 2012 meeting provide similar drama? Ursinus downed Muhlenberg, 63-61, in Allentown back on Jan. 18.

Johns Hopkins at Washington College
How close is this rivalry ... entering the 2011-12 season, the series was tied at 63 wins apiece. The Shoremen (9-8, 13-11) took a one-game lead over the Blue Jays (10-7, 14-10) with a 64-59 triumph in Baltimore on Jan. 18. Hopkins has dropped three straight games at the Cain Center with its last win coming in 2008 (70-57).
