Centennial Conference Athletes of the Week - Nov. 8-14

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The winter season is now in full swing with many Centennial basketball, swimming and wrestling teams now several weeks into their 2021-22 campaigns. The indoor track & field season will start in early December as the final winter sport yet to begin. 

Weekly award winners around the Centennial for the week of Nov. 8-14 include Mike Wallace of McDaniel men's basketball, Jessica Smith of Bryn Mawr women's basketball, Tom Graminski and Sophie Moyer of Franklin & Marshall swimming, and Alex LaVeck of McDaniel wrestling.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
  
Player of the Week
Mike Wallace, Sr., G, McDaniel

Wallace led the Green Terror to a 2-0 start to the season, averaging 31.0 points at the Crosstown Challenge. He hit 11-of-21 field goals as part of a 25-point outing at Penn College on Friday before scoring 37 points on 15-of-25 shooting that included a 3-for-4 performance from behind the arc against Lycoming. In addition to shooting 54.3 percent from the floor, he shot 81.8 percent from the line and 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per contest. The 37-point outing at Lycoming was the most by a Green Terror player since 1976.
 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Jessica Smith, Fr., G, Bryn Mawr
Turlock, Calif. | Pitman
Smith averaged 27 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per contest while shooting 48.8% from the field in a 2-0 week for the Owls. In her collegiate debut against Cedar Crest, she scored 26 points with eight rebounds and two steals. She also led the Owls to a thrilling overtime win against Trinity (D.C.) on Saturday, pouring in 28 points along with 11 boards and three steals. Her 28-point performance is tied for ninth most in Bryn Mawr single-game history. The two wins in a row are the first for the Owls since January of 2000, and they are off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 1991. 
 

MEN'S SWIMMING

Athlete of the Week
Tom Graminski, Sr., Franklin & Marshall
Red Hook, N.Y. | Red Hook
Graminski secured two individual wins and contributed to a pair of winning relays in the Diplomats' Centennial Conference dual win over Dickinson on Saturday. Individually, the senior touched first in the 100 breaststroke (59.08) and 200 breaststroke (2:15.47). Graminski was also part of the winning 200 medley relay (1:33.06) and 200 freestyle relay (1:24.03). 
 

WOMEN'S SWIMMING
 
Athlete of the Week
Sophie Moyer, Fr., Franklin & Marshall
Doylestown, Pa. | Central Bucks East
Moyer picked up the gold in three events in the Diplomats' 168-94 CC victory over Dickinson on Saturday. Individually, she swam to gold in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.24) and the 200 breaststroke (2:29.62). Moyer also anchored the winning 200 freestyle relay to a time of 1:39.98. 
 

WRESTLING
 
Athlete of the Week
Alex LaVeck, Jr., 165, McDaniel
Reisterstown, Md. | McDonogh
LaVeck went 4-0 with four pins at 165 pounds to lead McDaniel to a 4-0 day at the Green Terror Duals. His four pins all occured in the first period of his matches. He had three of those pins come in the opening minute, including a nine-second fall - the second fastest in program history.
