Centennial Conference Athletes of the Week - Feb. 14-20

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Crossover season is offiically here as winter sport regular seasons are winding down and several spring sports are now underway. This week will feature the final weekly awards for basketball and indoor track & field with those Centennial championship coming up this weekend. Meanwhile, regular season play has begun for baseball, lacrosse and tennis. 

This week's basketball award winners include a pair of athletes who helped their teams clinch the top seeds in the CC Tournament - Johns Hopkins' Conner Delaney and Gettysburg's Mackenzie Tinner. The final indoor track awards of the year went to McDaniel's Tyren Proctor, JHU's Justin Canedy, and Swarthmore's Rose Teszler and Adria Retter. Opening week award winners for baseball, men's tennis and men's and women's lacrosse included Tristan Steffe of F&M men's tennis, Danny Sheeler of Washington College baseball, Von Mabbs of Swarthmore men's lacrosse, Chris Brandau of Dickinson men's lacrosse, Jordan Basso of Gettysburg women's lacrosse, and Caroline Pirone of Dickinson women's lacrosse

MEN'S BASKETBALL
  
Player of the Week
Conner Delaney, Gr., G, Johns Hopkins
Garnet Valley, Pa. | Episcopal Academy
Delaney led Johns Hopkins to a pair of wins as the Blue Jays clinched their first Centennial Conference regular season title since 2015. He averaged 20.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists. Delaney scored 15 points to go with four boards, four assists and one steal in JHU's win at Washington College Wednesday. He followed that with 26 points, five rebounds and four assists in Hopkins' win over Ursinus on Senior Day.
 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
 
Player of the Week
Mackenzie Tinner, Sr., F, Gettysburg
Newtown, Pa. | Council Rock North
Tinner averaged 17.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.0 blocks, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game as Gettysburg closed the regular season as the top seed in the Centennial Conference. Tinner dropped a career-high 21 points with nine rebounds, five blocks, and four assists in a 59-47 victory over McDaniel which clinched the top seed for the Bullets. In the regular-season finale, the senior forward scored 13 points and snagged nine caroms in a 61-49 win at Swarthmore. Tinner shot a superb 62.5% (15-for-24) from the field throughout the two contests. 
 

Men's Indoor Track & Field
Track Athlete of the Week
Tyren Proctor, So., McDaniel
Westminster, Md. | North Point
Proctor established a new program-best mark in the 55-meter hurdles, qualifying second with a time of 7.92 seconds in the prelims to lead the Green Terror. In the finals, Proctor also finished second, taking his program record even lower with a time of 7.89 seconds. The previous mark of 7.94 had stood since 1994. His 60-meter hurdle converted time ranks second in the conference this season.
  
Men's Indoor Track & Field
Field Athlete of the Week
Justin Canedy, Sr., Johns Hopkins
Medina, Ohio | Buckeye
Canedy broke the Hopkins program record and posted the third-best triple jump mark in Centennial history on Sunday at the Princeton Indoor Invitational. Canedy's jump of 14.56 meters ranks atop the conference season by nearly a full meter and ranks 13th in Division III. 
 

Women's Indoor Track & Field
Track Athlete of the Week
Rose Teszler, Jr., Swarthmore
Newton, Mass. | Newton North
Teszler won the 400 meters at the Keogh Invitational with a personal record of 1:00.17, which ranks fourth in the Centennial this season. 
 
Women's Indoor Track & Field
Field Athlete of the Week
Adria Retter, Jr., Swarthmore
Quakertown, Pa. | Quakertown
Retter set a personal record (13.47m) in shot put at the Keogh Invitational on Saturday, before setting another personal record (13.92m) at the Princeton Invite on Sunday. The junior finished first at the Keough Invitational and second at Princeton. Retter's mark ranks atop the conference and eighth in the nation this season. 
 

Men's Tennis
 
Player of the Week
Tristan Steffe, Sr., Franklin & Marshall 
Derwood, Md. | Our Lady of Good Counsel
Steffe was nearly perfect against Muhlenberg on Sunday afternoon, pairing with Justin Pace for an 8-0 blanking at No. 2 doubles, then picking up a double bagel victory at No. 3 singles in a 6-0, 6-0 win.
 

Baseball 
 
Player of the Week
Danny Sheeler, So., INF, Washington College
Towson, Md. | Loyola Blakefield
Sheeler batted .533 (8-for-15) with a home run, six RBIs and six runs scored in three games this weekend for the Shoremen at Methodist in North Carolina. Sheeler notched at least two hits and two RBIs in each game. In the season opener against Messiah on Saturday, he went 3-for-5 and plated two runs. Against Arcadia on Sunday in the team's first game of the day, he went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs, three runs and a walk. The sophomore socked a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth was the team's first homer of 2022. Later in the day in an 18-14 win over host Methodist, he went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs. He had a run-scoring base hit in the third inning and plated the team's second of 11 runs in the top of the seventh on a single. On the weekend, he had a .563 on-base percentage and a .800 slugging percentage.
 

Men's Lacrosse
Offensive Player of the Week
Von Mabbs, So., M, Swarthmore
Concord, Mass. | St. Mark's
Mabbs tallied four goals and two assists in Swarthmore's 14-12 season-opening victory against Widener on Saturday. The sophomore connected on 44.4% of his shots and also added a ground ball in the win. 
 
Men's Lacrosse
Defensive Player of the Week
Chris Brandau, Jr., GK, Dickinson
Timonium, Md. | Boys' Latin 
Brandau's debut with the Red and White was one to remember as he allowed just six goals and amassed 24 saves as Dickinson secured a 13-6 win at 12th-ranked Stevens. 
 

Women's Lacrosse
Offensive Player of the Week
Jordan Basso, So., A, Gettysburg
Rye, N.Y. | Rye
Basso tossed in a career-high five goals and dished out an assist to lead No. 9 Gettysburg past Stevenson in the season opener. Basso did all of her offensive damage in the first half as the Bullets rolled to a 13-3 lead at the break. She also added four ground balls and one caused turnover.
 
Women's Lacrosse
Defensive Player of the Week
Caroline Pirone, So., D, Dickinson
Chevy Chase, Md. | Georgetown Visitation
Pirone was a key cog on the defensive end of the field in Dickinson's season-opening road win at Lebanon Valley on Saturday. She caused a game-high four turnovers and tied for the team-high in ground balls with three.
