MACUNGIE, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall senior Ben Mitchell set a championship record with a 4-under-par 67 in the first round of the Centennial men's golf championship at Brookside CC.

Mitchell's 67 bested the tournament's opening-round record by five shots and tied the Conference single-round record held by three other players. He helped lead the Diplomats to a four-man score of 286 - bettering the championship's record low round by five shots. Dickinson and McDaniel are tied for second at 299, while Swarthmore is fourth at 301. Gettysburg (305), Muhlenberg (308) and Ursinus (339) trail the field.

Mitchell, who posted six birdies on the 6,534-yard Brookside layout, has a four-shot advantage over Dickinson's Charlie Zane who carded an even-par 71. Swarthmore's Dan Altieri and F&M's Seiichiro Nakai are five shots back at 72.

The second round begins on Saturday at 11:30 with the final round scheduled for a Sunday, 12:30 start.
