Saturday's Men's Soccer Recap

Saturday's Men's Soccer Recap

Johns Hopkins 2, Swarthmore 0
Visiting Johns Hopkins scored goals to open both the first and second half on its way to defeating the No. 21 Swarthmore College men's soccer team (10-5, 4-3) by the score of 2-0 on a Homecoming Saturday night at Clothier Field. Taylor Woodrum scored off a corner kick in the sixth minute for the Blue Jays (8-4-1, 5-1-1) to silence the crowd of more than 600 on hand for Garnet Homecoming. Then in the opening seconds of the second half, the Blue Jays' Sean Coleman scored on a blast from the top left corner of the box to give Hopkins the commanding 2-0 lead. With the win, the Blue Jays now sit in the driver's seat for the Centennial Conference's regular season championship and for the right to host the upcoming Centennial playoffs.

Muhlenberg 2, Gettysburg 1
When it comes to putting in direct kicks, Nate Squire has been lights out this year.
The junior midfielder scored in the 20th minute to break a 1-1 tie, and his goal stood up as the winner as the Muhlenberg men's soccer team posted an important 2-1 victory at Gettysburg in a game delayed 40 minutes at the start due to a power outage. The result kept the Mules (9-4-1, 5-2) in a second-place tie, one point out of first place, with a week to go in the Centennial Conference regular season. Johns Hopkins (5-1-1) beat Swarthmore (4-3) to retain its hold on first place, while Dickinson (5-2) remained in a tie with Muhlenberg by defeating Ursinus.

Dickinson 3, Ursinus 0
The Dickinson College men's soccer team improved to 5-2 in Centennial Conference play with a 3-0 win over Ursinus on Senior Day. The Red Devils struck twice in the first half and added another insurance goal with just over 14 minutes to play in the game.

Franklin & Marshall 1, Washington College 0
Mike Irving's tally late in the first half was all Franklin & Marshall needed as it took down host Washington College, 1-0, in Centennial Conference (CC) men's soccer action on Saturday night. The Diplomats move to 9-4-2 (4-3 CC) with the victory, while the Shoremen have now lost five straight and fall to 3-9-2 (1-5-1 CC). Irving provided the game's lone goal in the 41st minute with a nice follow-up score after a trio of consecutive saves from Washington goalkeeper Chris Phipps. Phipps stymied two Max Watson strikes and an attempt from Ben Beaver before Irving buried the rebound from Beaver's shot to give the Diplomats the advantage just before halftime.

Haverford 2, McDaniel 1 (OT)
Senior Matt Wetherell headed home the game winner in Haverford College's 2-1 overtime victory against host McDaniel College Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference men's soccer action. Wetherell's header came in the 95th minute with an assist from David Robinson, sending Haverford (7-6-1, 3-4 CC) to its fourth straight victory. McDaniel drops to 4-9-2 overall and 1-6 in the league.
