Swarthmore's Maxted, Gettysburg's Bellis Named to Academic All-America Soccer Team

Complete Academic All-America Men's Soccer Team

Peter Maxted '14 of the Swarthmore College men's soccer team has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III Men's Soccer First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Tuesday.

An economics major and math/computer science minor from Port Washington, N.Y., Maxted  is the 14th Swarthmore student-athlete named Academic All-American since the program began in 1987. He is just the eighth first-team selection in program history and the fourth all-time selection from the men's soccer program.  The last Garnet athlete named to the first team was David D'Annunzio '12, who was named to the men's soccer first team last season.

A goalkeeper in his first full season as a starter, Maxted won the starting job early in the season and never looked back, recording seven shutouts and allowing just 10 goals all season for an .861 save percentage and a 0.54 goals-against average. Maxted's goals-against average ranks fourth in program history for a single-season.

With Maxted between the pipes, the Garnet finished the season 16-3-2, reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 round for the third time in five seasons.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Junior Andrew Bellis (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men's Soccer Third Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced on Tuesday, Nov. 27.

Bellis is the first Gettysburg College men's soccer player to be named an Academic All-American by CoSIDA and he is the 27th selection overall for the Bullets athletics program.

Bellis was a key contributor for Gettysburg's defensive unit this fall. He appeared in 16 matches with five starts and helped the team post a 1.44 goals against average with five shutouts. The Bullets recorded shutouts in three of the junior's five starts in the backfield.

Over his first three seasons, Bellis has appeared in 40 matches and has helped Gettysburg accumulate 11 shutouts.

Academically, Bellis carries a 4.02 GPA as a double-major in philosophy and political science. He is a two-time member of the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll and a four-time selection to Gettysburg's Dean's Honor List.
