CARLISLE, Pa. – Sophomore Billy
Evers netted his fourth goal of the season in the 103rd
minute to propel the Swarthmore College men's soccer team to a 2-1
come-from-behind victory in double overtime over 16th-ranked
Dickinson on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Miller Memorial Field. Playing
shorthanded with 10 men, the Garnet rallied to pick up their third
victory of the season in extra time to stay in contention for a
playoff berth.
The game remained scoreless for the first period and into the
break, with both teams trading shots and neither gaining a clear
advantage. Dickinson (11-3-1, CC 6-1) was the first to score six
minutes into the second half when Alfred Hylton-Dei found the back
of the net on a cross shot through the box off an assist from Drew
Carneal.
With only ten players competing after a red card sent a Garnet
defender off the field, Swarthmore (9-5-2, CC 3-4) managed to
overcome adversity and scored in the 86th minute with a goal
coming from freshman Tommy
Sheehan. It was the first marker of his career.
The Garnet maintained their momentum through the first overtime and
scored a little over two minutes into the second overtime when
Evers found the left corner of the net to defeat the Red Devils.
The goal gave Swarthmore its third victory in double overtime this
season, and all of those wins have come on the road.
Garnet junior goalkeeper Tyler
Zon kept Swarthmore's playoffs hopes alive with nine
saves, while Red Devils goalkeeper Reed Milbrath also had nine
saves in the losing effort.
Swarthmore will be on the road for the last time next week to play
Washington College in Chestertown, Md. on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7
p.m.
