Emory Eliminates Dickinson

Box Score

The Dickinson men's soccer team suffered a first round setback in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship on Saturday, falling to Emory University, 3-1, at Lynchburg College.

The Red Devils found themselves in a 3-0 deficit in the first half as the Eagles stuck twice in a span of five minutes, putting a goal on the board, 15:05 into the match.

Jason McCartney finished an assist from Aiden Datene and Christian Meyer tallied, unassisted, just under six minutes later.

The Eagles stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 34th minute as McCartney was flagged for off-sides, but the call was overruled by the center official, giving Emory their third goal of the match and McCartney his second of the day.

The Red Devils had some strong runs of play, but were unable to produce many quality scoring chances in the first half.

Dickinson continued to battle throughout the second half as well, and finally broke through as sophomore Brendan McGovern (Burlington, Vt./Kimball Union Academy) found the back of the net with just under 23 minutes remaining in regulation.

The Red Devils used the momentum to create some strong opportunities in the final minutes but were unable to cut into the deficit.

Senior Will Bracken (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) hit a shot off the post with just under five minutes to play and first-year Colin Fagan (Chalfont, Pa./C.B. South) made a great run late, but Cole Gallagher was able to come away with the save.

Emory held the edge in shots, 19-14, while the Devils had the advantage on corners, 4-2. Gallagher finished with five saves as the Eagles improve to 13-5-1 overall. They advance to face Lynchburg College on Sunday at 4:00 pm.

Sophomore goaltender Frederick Meagher (Southport, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe) made five saves as well for Dickinson.

The Red Devils finish the season 11-7-3 overall.
